Titans split with Fredonia State

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster baseball team split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon with Fredonia State, winning game one 8-7 on a walk-off base hit by sophomore Tom Rook (Clarence Center, N.Y., Clarence) before dropping a 9-4 decision in game two.

Westminster improved to 3-2 this season with the split. Fredonia State opened its season Saturday.

Game 1
The Titans pounded out 14 hits in the opener. The Blue Devils, fueled by a six-run fourth, stretched its lead to 7-2 after three-and-a-half frames. Run-scoring, two-out base hits by juniors Parker Lyons (Rochester, Pa., Rochester) and Braden Zeigler (New Castle, Pa., Shenango) in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings cut the Fredonia State lead to three, 7-4, before sophomore Ian Temple's (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) two-out, three-run triple tied the game at 7-all. Temple smacked a two-out, two-run home run to left center in the third inning. He scored the game-winning run on Rook's base hit after back-to-back walks by sophomore Aaron Jones (Buffalo, N.Y., Canisius) and senior Josh Reed (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk).

Sophomore right-hander  Brandon Roher (Trafford, Pa., Penn-Trafford) fired a scoreless fifth before freshman righty Nate Lemke (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) threw a pair of scoreless innings to secure the relief win, his first collegiate victory. He gave up one hit and struck out two.

Temple went 2-for-5 with a triple, a home run, five RBIs and two runs scored. Junior Quinn Marquis (Hinckley, Ohio, Highland) reached three times from his leadoff spot, finishing 2-for-3 with a walk and a pair of runs scored.

Game 2
Westminster jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first on Ziegler's fielder's choice RBI and a two-run single Jones. Fredonia evened the game at 3-all with its three-run fifth before exploding for five runs in the sixth to grab an 8-3 lead. Temple drilled a solo home run to left center in the sixth to cut the lead to four, 8-4, before Vinny Grazioplene's pinch-hit home run in the seventh.

Freshman righty Jacob Harrelson (Canal Fulton, Ohio, Green) allowed one hit and walked one while striking out seven in the 4.0 inning no-decision.
