Westminster rallies for four-set win over Saint Francis

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster women's volleyball team overcame an opening set loss to defeating visiting Saint Francis 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

After dropping the first set 26-24, Westminster rattled off three-straight set wins, 25-8, 25-19 and 25-23. Westminster improved to 12-8 overall, while Saint Francis fell to 7-9.

Senior Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) recorded a 13-kill, 12-dig double-double, her sixth straight and 10th of the year. Junior Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) totaled 10 kills, 16 assists, eight digs, three blocks and two service aces. Sophomore Kylie Anthony (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) added seven kills and nine digs. Junior Brooke Gecina (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) had 19 digs and two aces while senior Anna-Kate Davis (Boonsboro, Md., Boonsboro) finished with a 20-assist, 12-dig double-double. She has posted 20 or more assists in five-straight matches. Freshmen Stephanie Strenk (Avoca, Mich., Yale) and Violet Seaman (Hartville, Ohio, Lake) added three blocks each.

Westminster had the first set within reach at 24-22, but Saint Francis scored the final four points to take it 26-24. Earlier, the Titans answered a 7-8 deficit by moving ahead 12-9, with Trent and Seaman each putting down kills during that stretch. Trent later added a kill and an ace as the Titans built a 22-19 lead before Saint Francis closed the set.

The Titans closed the second set by winning seven of the final eight rallies from an 18-7 lead, with Gecina serving back-to-back aces before a Saint Francis attack error ended the set at 25-8. Earlier, the Titans built separation with service points from Davis, O'Brien and senior Maggie Shadle (Marion Center, Pa., Marion Center), including consecutive aces by O'Brien and two aces by Shadle.

The Titans took control of the third set with a run from 10-9 to 17-9, including six straight points with Gecina serving. Trent, O'Brien and Anthony each contributed kills during the set, while Strenk and O'Brien combined on a block in the middle stretch. The Titans finished off the set 25-19 on a Trent kill from Davis.

Westminster erased an 11-8 fourth-set deficit with five straight points, then took a 12-11 lead on O'Brien's kill from Davis during Trent's service turn. Saint Francis later moved ahead 15-13, but the Titans stayed level through the late exchanges and reached set point after a service error and attack error made it 24-22. Saint Francis pulled within 24-23 before junior Dakota Hershberger's (Belleville, Pa., Mifflin County) block on the next rally finished a 25-23 set for the Titans.
