Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Westminster rallies to force fifth set, falls short of reverse sweep at Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa.--The Westminster women's volleyball team battled back from a 2-0 deficit Wednesday night at Allegheny but fell 21-19 in the deciding set against its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival.

Allegheny jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 25-16 and 26-24 wins in the first and second sets. Westminster pulled even with a 25-19 win in the third and a 25-23 win in the fourth.

Westminster fell to 12-9 overall and 3-2 in the PAC, while Allegheny improved to 7-12 overall and 3-3 in the league.

Junior Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) recorded her sixth triple-double of the season, finishing with 21 kills, 27 assists and 10 digs. Senior Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) recorded her sixth-straight double-double, finishing with 18 kills and 14 digs. Junior Brooke Gecina (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) had 35 digs, her sixth match of the year with 30-plus digs. She added five service aces. Senior Anna-Kate Davis (Boonsboro, Md., Boonsboro) set a career high with 34 assists and added 11 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Senior Zoie Reid (Salem, Ohio, Salem) hit .529, registering 12 kills on 19 attacks. Freshman Jenna Renner (Port Allegheny, Pa., Port Allegheny) added a career-high nine kills and had two blocks.

Westminster could not overcome Allegheny's early separation in the first set, falling behind 6-1 and 11-3. The Titans' clearest push came midway through the set, when sophomore Kylie Anthony's (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) kill and Gecina's ace moved the score to 17-11. Trent added a late kill, but Allegheny closed out the set 25-16.

The Titans erased a 14-10 deficit with four-straight points, tying the set on an O'Brien kill from Davis. After Allegheny briefly went back in front, the Titans answered with kills by Renner and Trent, and Renner added two more points to put the Titans ahead 19-16. Allegheny later tied the set at 22-22 and, after O'Brien tied it again at 24-24, scored the final two points to take the set 26-24.

Westminster withstood Allegheny's late push in the third set, getting consecutive Trent kills off Davis assists to finish the 25-19 set win. Earlier, the Titans built separation with contributions from O'Brien, Reid and Trent, including a stretch that moved the Titans ahead 23-15 before Allegheny answered.

The Titans held off Gators late push in the fourth set, answering a 23-23 tie with O'Brien's kill from Davis and Gecina's service ace to finish a 25-23 set win. Earlier, sophomore Halle Albers' (Corry, Pa., Corry) service turn produced four-straight points, including kills by freshman Violet Seaman (Hartville, Ohio, Lake) and Trent and an Albers ace, to move the Titans from a 5-4 edge to a 9-4 lead.

Westminster pushed ahead late in the fifth when Reid put down back-to-back kills from Davis for a 14-12 lead. Allegheny answered to tie it at 14-14, and the teams traded points until the Titans were level at 19-19 following an Allegheny service error. Skyler Fatola's kill and a Westminster attack error gave Allegheny the final two points and the set, 21-19.
