Westminster women downed by Capital

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Despite having four players finish in double figures, the Westminster College women's basketball program suffered a 75-65 loss to Capital Saturday afternoon at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium. 

Sophomore Katie Maryo (Cleveland, Ohio, Magnificat) led the Titans with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting. She was 3-of-8 from beyond the three-point line. Freshman Bella Calcamuggio (Sylvania, Ohio, Notre Dame) finished with 11 points and posted career highs in rebounds, with six, and assists, with eight. Sophomore Maddie Syka (Darlington, Pa., Lincoln Park) and junior Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) added 10 apiece, with Syka registering a career-high eight boards. Sophomore Katie Grexa (Hartford, Ohio, Badger) recorded a career-high 10 rebounds. 

Samaree Perkins paced Capital with 24 points and nine rebounds. She finished with 17 second half points. Kyah Ewing added 19. 

Maryo fired in seven first quarter points, helping Westminster storm out to a 15-5 lead midway through the period and carry a 20-12 lead into the second. Capital, riding a 17-0 spurt between the first and second quarters, went up 15, 27-20, with just under seven minutes remaining in the half. Cano's layup as time expired trimmed the lead to two, 37-35, going into the break. 

A Cano layup with under two minutes left in the third cut the Capital lead to one, 51-50, and Grexa's three-point play with 17 seconds to go in the period trimmed the lead to two, 55-53, heading into the fourth. Perkins scored 11 of her 24 in the fourth, helping the Comets outscore the Titans 20-12 over the final 10 minutes. Capital went 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the final quarter. 

Up next:
Westminster will return to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action Wednesday at Grove City (8-3). Tipoff from the Grove City College Arena is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The Wolverines had their six-game winning streak snapped Saturday after falling at Juniata, 70-48.
