Westminster falls at Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball program suffered a 78-64 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss at Grove City Wednesday evening. 

Junior Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) led Westminster (4-8, 1-2 PAC) with 13 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Katie Maryo (Cleveland, Ohio, Magnificat) added 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting and went 3-of-7 from three-point field goal range. Freshman Bella Calcamuggio (Sylvania, Ohio, Notre Dame) had eight points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals while sophomore Katie Grexa (Hartford, Ohio, Badger) totaled eight points and eight boards. 

Grove City (9-3, 3-0 PAC) had three players finish in double figures. Brooke McCoy registered 19 points off the Wolverines' bench, scoring 10 in the first half. She went 7-of-11 from the floor and was 3-of-4 from beyond the three-point line. Meredith Sherrerd chipped in with 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists while Reese Hasley added 12 points, six rebounds and three assists. 

Westminster got off to a terrific start, pushing its first quarter lead to as many as 12, 20-8, with just over three minutes remaining before going into the second up by three, 22-19. Maryo knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the first. Grove City outscored Westminster 18-4 in the second, including an 11-2 run over the first five-plus minutes of the second, and grabbed a 30-24 lead on a Brooke McCoy three-pointer with four-and-a-half left in the quarter. The Wolverines scored the final seven points of the second and went into the half up 11, 37-26.

Fueled by a 12-0 run, Grove City's third quarter lead swelled to 20, 59-39, on a pair of McCoy free throws with just over four minutes left. The Wolverines took a 61-46 lead into the fourth. Sophomore Angelina Brush's (Murrysville, Pa., Franklin Regional) three-pointer 27 seconds into the final quarter capped an 8-0 run between the third and fourth to pull Westminster to within a dozen, 67-55, before Brush knocked down a jumper with just under four minutes left cut Grove City's lead to 10, 69-59. A 7-0 run stretched the Wolverines' lead to 17, 77-60, with just over a minute remaining. 

Grove City outrebounded Westminster 45-33 and saw its reserves outscore the Titans' bench 34-19.

Westminster returns to Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium Saturday against Saint Vincent (8-4, 3-0 PAC). Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. The Bearcats cruised to a 76-33 win over Franciscan Wednesday in Latrobe.
