Westminster pulls away in second half to beat Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa.--Westminster used a strong second half to secure a 73-58 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory Wednesday night at Thiel.  

Winners of three straight and seven of its last eight, Westminster improved to 12-6 overall and 7-2 in the league. 

Senior Drew Weir (Salem, Ohio, Salem) paced Westminster with 19 points and seven rebounds. Graduate student DJ Harrell (Cleveland, Ohio, East Technical) finished with 18 points and three boards. He has scored 15 or more points in 10-straight games. Freshman Nick Ryan (Warren, Ohio, John F. Kennedy) added 10 points and six rebounds. 

Anthony Henderson II had 13 points and four rebounds for Thiel (4-13, 1-8 PAC). 

Westminster ran its first half lead to seven, 25-18, on senior Mick Hergenrother's (Canfield, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) triple with 7:33 to go. The teams traded buckets to end the half, with Das Sanders tying the game at 34-all with eight seconds left before Hergenrother knocked down a long two-pointer at the buzzer to give Westminster a 36-34 edge going into the break. 

Weir paced the Titans with 10 first half points. 

Nursing a five-point lead, 49-44, with just over 14 minutes remaining, Westminster rattled off 12-straight points over the following four-plus minutes to go up 17, 61-44. Harrell had six points during the scoring spurt. The Titans built a 21-point lead, 71-50, on Weir's jumper with under four minutes to play before securing the 15-point win. 

Westminster finished shooting 50.8 percent (30-59) from the floor and outscored Thiel in the paint 50-32. 

Up next:
Westminster will host Chatham (13-4, 8-1 PAC) Saturday. Tipoff from Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium is scheduled for 3 p.m. The Cougars, winners of eight straight, overcame a three-point halftime deficit to earn an 84-72 win at W&J Wednesday night.
