Westminster falls at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball team suffered an 86-74 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss at Waynesburg Saturday afternoon inside the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. 

Junior Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) led four Westminster (6-11, 3-5 PAC) players in double figures, finishing with 18 points, six rebounds and three blocks. She went 7-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Sophomore Maddie Syka (Darlington, Pa., Lincoln Park) totaled 12 points, six rebounds and three assists in 23 reserve minutes. Sophomore Katie Maryo (Cleveland, Ohio, Magnificat) added 11 points and three rebounds while junior Kennedy Arison (Medina, Ohio, Akron Hoban) chipped in with 10 points and three rebounds.

Five finished in double figures for Waynesburg (7-10, 3-5 PAC). Kalista Friday paced the Yellow Jackets with a 19-point, 12-rebound double-double. She added eight assists and six steals. 

Westminster scored the final seven points of the first quarter and led 22-14 going into the second. Syka led the way in the opening period with seven points, going 2-of-2 from the floor and knocking down all three of her free throw attempts. The Yellow Jackets, down by four, 35-31, with 4:27 left in the half, outscored the Titans 9-2 over the final four minutes to go into the break up three, 40-37.

Waynesburg opened up a 15-point lead, 54-39, after riding a 14-2 scoring run over the first five minutes of the third. The Jackets led by 10, 64-54, heading into the final quarter. Freshman Jenna Zuelch's (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) layup with just under five minutes to play cut the deficit to eight, 75-67, before Waynesburg stretched its lead to 14, 86-72, with just under a minute remaining. 

Waynesburg outrebounded Westminster 45-38 and had an 18-10 edge on the offensive glass. The Titans shot 43.3 percent (26-60) from the floor and made 14 of its season-high 21 (.667) free throw attempts. 

Up next:
Westminster will travel to Greenville Wednesday to take on Thiel (6-11, 1-7 PAC). Tipoff from Maenpa Court at Beeghly Gymnasium is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thiel scored a 77-65 victory over Franciscan Saturday.
