Westminster uses strong fourth quarter to edge Hiram

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball program erased an 11-point third-quarter deficit by outscoring visiting Hiram 20-7 in the fourth quarter to secure a spirited 63-61 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win Wednesday evening at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Westminster snapped a four-game losing streak with the win, improving to 5-9 overall and 2-3 in the league. Hiram fell to 5-9 overall and 2-3 in the PAC. 

Sophomore Katie Grexa (Hartford, Ohio, Badger) registered the first double-double of her career, finishing with career highs in points, with 17, and rebounds, with 16. Junior Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) had 17 points and six rebounds. It was her fourth game of the year scoring 15 or more points. Sophomore Katie Maryo (Cleveland, Ohio, Magnificat) added nine points on 3-of-9 shooting from three-point field goal range. 

Sarah Seaman scored 20 points for Hiram. Star Owens added 15 points and eight rebounds while Maya Joiner posted an 11-point, 19-rebound double-double. 

Down 11, 54-43, at the conclusion of the third quarter, Westminster outscored Hiram 18-3 over the first nine-plus minutes of the fourth to go up by four, 61-57, on a Cano jumper with 53 seconds to play. Grexa and Cano combined to scored 11-straight points during the surge. Advika Srinivasan knocked down a jumper with 12 seconds left to cut the lead to two, 61-59, before Cano split a pair of free throws with nine seconds remaining to stretch the lead to three, 62-59. Grexa grabbed her 16th rebound of the night on Seaman's missed three-pointer with four seconds to go.

Grexa and Cano had nine points each during the Titans' 20 point fourth quarter. Westminster shot 57.1 percent (8-14) in the final period. 

The Titans finished with a 44-39 advantage on the glass and outscored the Terriers 32-24 in the paint. 

Up next:
Westminster will travel to Steubenville, Ohio Saturday to take on Franciscan (3-11, 0-5 PAC). Tipoff from Finnegan Fieldhouse is scheduled for 1 p.m. Franciscan suffered an 80-61 loss to visiting Bethany Wednesday afternoon.
