Westminster scores wire-to-wire win at Franciscan

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio--The Westminster College women's basketball program led wire-to-wire in Saturday's 75-58 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory at Franciscan. 

The 75 points were a season high for Westminster, which improved to 6-9 overall and 3-3 in the PAC. 

Sophomore Katie Maryo (Cleveland, Ohio, Magnificat) led three Westminster players in double figures, finishing with 16 points and five rebounds. Junior Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) had 10 points and four rebounds while sophomore Katie Grexa (Hartford, Ohio, Badger) added 10 points and eight boards. Junior Kennedy Arison (Medina, Ohio, Akron Hoban) totaled seven points, five rebounds and a career-high eight assists. Freshman Jenna Zuelch (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) and sophomore Maddie Syka (Darlington, Pa., Lincoln Park) chipped in with nine and eight points, respectively, off the bench. 

Jazzlyn Melnyk led Franciscan (3-12, 0-6 PAC) with a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double.

Westminster rattled off seven-straight points to begin the opening quarter and went into the second up six, 15-9. The Titans pushed their lead to as many as 15, 41-26, late in the second before taking a 13-point lead, 41-28, into the break. Maryo and Grexa scored eight apiece in the first half while Zuelch added seven. 

The Titans, behind a 10-0 scoring run, saw their lead in the third swell to as many as 25, 60-35, with just under two minutes to go before ending the quarter up 21, 62-41. Maryo scored eight of Westminster's 21 points in the third. Franciscan outscored Westminster 13-3 over the first four-plus minutes of the fourth to pull to within 11, 65-54. The Titans scored eight of the final 10 to secure the 17-point league win. 

Westminster shot a season-best 44.9 percent (31-69) from the floor and outrebounded Franciscan 43-36, including a season-high 15 on the offensive glass.

Westminster will host Geneva (5-10, 2-4 PAC) Wednesday. Tipoff from Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Geneva earned a 73-71 road win at Waynesburg Saturday afternoon.
