Westminster third at Catholic

HAGERSTOWN, Md.--Junior Katie Rose Rankin (Sewickley, Pa., North Allegheny) fired a program-record 71 on Sunday to help lead the Westminster College women's golf team to a third-place finish at Catholic's two-day Cardinal Fall Classic. 

The nine-team, 49-player event was hosted by the Black Rock Golf Course. Marymount claimed the team title with a 36-hole score of 609 (304-305). Catholic was the runner-up with two-day total of 626 (317-309). Westminster combined for two-round, program-tying 637, following Saturday's 323 by tying a program low with its 314 on Sunday. The Titans carded a 637 April 8-9, 2024 at the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational, posting a second round 314 after an opening-round 323. 

Shepard's Sara Veara won the individual title with a two-round total of 143 (68-75). Marymount's Chonpatchsorn Mahathep and Noelle Jensen were second and third, respectively. Mahathep finished with a 147 (70-77) while Jensen shot a 148 (76-72). 

Rankin finished in fourth place and tied her own 36-hole program record with a 149. She followed Saturday's 78 with the one-under 71 on Sunday, concluding the round with six birdies. It is Rankin's third time registering a 149 at a 36-hole event: she carded a 149 at Allegheny's Guy & Jeanne Kuhn Memorial Invitational in both 2023 and 2024. 

Sophomore Ava Liburdi (Hermitage, Pa., Hickory) finished in a four-way tie for ninth place with a 162, shooting a 79 Sunday after Saturday's 83. Senior Alyssa Rapp (Poland, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) was one of three players to tie for 13th with a 163. She scored a 79 on Saturday and an 84 on Monday. Freshman CeCe Morgan (Fairview, Pa., Cathedral Prep) finished 17th with a 165, shooting an 83 on Saturday and an 82 on Sunday. Senior Olivia Kana (North Huntingdon, Pa., Greensburg Central Catholic) rounded out Westminster's scoring five with a 167, firing an 82 on Sunday after her opening-round 85. 

Freshmen Brooke Hart (Meadville, Pa., Meadville)Madey Myers (Hermitage, Pa., Hickory) and Paige Ponteous (Butler, Pa., Butler) competed as individuals. Hart tied for 22nd with a 174 (86-88), Myers tied for 27th with a 179 (88-91) and Ponteous was 41st with a 204 (106-98). 

Up next:
Westminster will compete at the John Carroll Fall Invitational next Saturday and Sunday at the Manakiki Golf Course in Willoughby Hills, Ohio.
