Westminster falls in five-setter to Hiram

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's volleyball team suffered a five-set loss to visiting Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Hiram Wednesday night at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Westminster (9-6, 1-2) came into Wednesday's match as winners of six of its last seven.

Sophomore Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) finished with 11 kills and season highs in assists, with 23, and digs, with 13, to secure the first triple double of her career. She also added four blocks. O'Brien's triple double was the first in the league this season.

Senior Rachel LaSalvia (Columbus, Pa., Corry) had 11 kills while junior Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) chipped in with eight kills and 13 digs. Senior Angie Nardone (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) added 10 kills and eight digs while junior Maggie Shadle (Marion Center, Pa., Marion Center) finished with eight digs. Freshman Mackenzie Ging (Canton, Ohio, Glenoak) upped her season service aces total to 10 with three on Wednesday.

Sofia Smotek led Hiram (10-1, 3-0) matched her season high with 23 kills and added 16 digs for her third-straight double-double. Megan Chiang registered an 18-kill, 21-dig double-double. Kelly Hoffman finished with a 45-assist, 24-dig double-double.

Set 1: Westminster 25, Hiram 15
Ging's first service ace of the match capped a 4-0 Westminster run and extended its lead to 10, 19-9. Senior Jamie Robertson (Los Angeles, Calif., Palisades Charter) followed up a Hiram service error at 23-15 to secure the set win with a service ace of her own. The Titans hit .229 in the first, led by Trent's four kills.

Set 2: Westminster 28, Hiram 26
The back-and-forth second featured 12 ties and seven lead changes. Westminster, trailing by two, 23-21, evened the score at 26-all on O'Brien's fourth kill of the set. Back-to-back Hiram attack errors helped the Titans secure the two-point set win. LaSalvia hit .571 in the second, finishing the set with four kills.

Set 3: Hiram 25, Westminster 18
The Terriers led from start to finish in the third after jumping out to an early 5-0 lead. Smotek, with the set-deciding kill, had seven of her 23 in the third.

Set 4: Hiram 25, Westminster 18
Smotek (6) and Sydney Wenzel (5) combined for 11 of the Terriers' 15 kills in the fourth. Smotek's sixth of the set stretched the lead to five, 23-18, before two-straight Westminster attack errors pushed the match to the pivotal fifth set.

Set 5: Hiram 15, Westminster 9
Westminster took a timeout in fifth after watching Hiram race out to an early 6-1 lead. A 6-1 scoring run stretched the Terriers' lead to nine, 12-3. Westminster rattled off five-straight points to pull to within five, 14-9, but were unable to get any closer.
