Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Westminster edged by Chatham

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College men's lacrosse program was edged by Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Chatham University 13-12 Saturday afternoon at the UPMC Sports Complex. 

Westminster fell to 6-5 overall and 1-2 in league play. Chatham improved to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in the PAC. 

Freshman attacker Ethan Kurtz (Hummelstown, Pa., Lower Dauphin) finished with four goals and three assists while senior midfielder Gavin Jones (Henrico, Va., Douglas S. Freeman) added four goals, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Graduate midfielder Jimmy Sentz (Catonsville, Md., Loyola Blakefield) scored two goals and had an assist. 

Junior short-stick Jahiem Hawkins (Huntington Station, N.Y., Huntington) totaled four ground balls and one caused turnover. Graduate defender David Evangelista (Pittsburgh, Pa., Chartiers Valley) and freshman long-stick Tanner Crosby (Park City, Utah, Park City) each caused a pair of turnovers and had a ground ball. Freshman Alex Rivera (Ewing, N.J., Notre Dame) was 6-of-14 from the X with a pair of ground balls while freshman Nolan Grieshaber (Rocklin, Calif., Rocklin) recorded a career-high 22 saves and two ground balls. 

Ethan Rinker and Jacob Lubawy had four points each for the Cougars. Rinker scored four goals while Lubawy had two goals and two assists. Zen Smith made 11 saves in the win.  

Westminster jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one quarter, thanks to a pair of Setz scores. Chatham responded by scoring the first three goals of the second before back-to-back goals by Jones, including a score with just 13 seconds to go before half, gave the Titans a 5-4 lead at the break. Outscoring Westminster 5-3 in the third, including back-to-back man-up scores to close out the quarter, the Cougars went into the fourth leading by two, 9-7. Jones and Kurtz both scored to start the fourth, tying the game at 9-9 with 11:39 to go, before Kurtz's man-up goal with just over 11 remaining gave Westminster a 10-9 lead. Chatham scored four-straight goals with under eight to go to push its lead back to three, 13-10, with under five left. Junior midfielder Kyler Nigliazzo (Montgomery, Texas, Magnolia West) scored an unassisted goal with 1:19 to go before sophomore midfielder Anthony Trella (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) cut the deficit to just one, 13-12, with 43 seconds remaining. 

Rivera won the ensuing faceoff and called a timeout with just over 30 seconds left. Jones' shot went just high with eight seconds to go. 

Chatham outshot Westminster 56-33 and had a 35-23 edge in shots on goal. Westminster was successful on 28 of its 33 clear attempts.
