Westminster men surge into second place at PAC Championships

BOARDMAN, Ohio--Sophomore Tyler Hager's (Lehighton, Pa., Palmerton) fired a low-round, two-under 70 Friday to help the Westminster College men's golf program climb into second place at the conclusion of the third round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championships Friday at the Mill Creek Golf Course.

The final two rounds of the 72-hole championship are being played on Mill Creek's South Course.

Allegheny College, last year's conference champion, leads the nine-team championship field with a combined three-round score of 884 after shooting a 295 Friday. Westminster, which entered the spring championship rounds in third place with a 623, carded a third-round low score of 292 for a three-round total of 915. Washington & Jefferson College is in third place with a three-round score of 917. The Presidents combined to shoot a 310 on Friday. 

Hager, now sitting in a three-way tie for fourth with a three-round score of 227, entered the final two rounds of the league championship 18th after his two-round score of 157 (76-81) at the fall championships. 

Senior Ellian Ascencio (Venetia, Pa., Peters Township) is tied for seventh, shooting a 74 Friday for a three-round total of 228. Senior Joe Trudeau (Ann Arbor, Mich., Skyline) is tied for 13th, taking a three-round score of 231 in Saturday's final round. He shot a 77 on Friday. Senior Gavin Batdorff (Berlin Center, Ohio, South Range) is in a three-way tie for 15th with a three-round score of 232. He fired a one-over 71 on Friday. Graduate student Kai Haseyama (Encinitas, Calif., San Dieguito Academy), rounding out Westminster's scoring five, is tied for 21st after shooting a 78 Friday. He owns a three-round score of 239. 

The PAC's 36-hole fall championship event was hosted by the Avalon Golf & Country Club in Warren, Ohio. The men completed a pair of rounds at Avalon Lakes in Warren. The combined 72-hole team totals determine PAC team champions and winners of the league's automatic-qualifying bids to the NCAA Division III Championships.

Saturday's first groups are scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m. Haseyama will get things going for Westminster at 11:30 a.m.
