Westminster triumphs in triple overtime thriller

Nigliazzo nets game-winner with 1:27 to go

PURCHASE, N.Y.--Junior midfielder Kyler Nigliazzo (Montgomery, Texas, Magnolia West) scored with less than a minute-and-a-half to go in the third overtime, giving the Westminster College men's lacrosse program an 11-10 victory over Manhattanville University Saturday afternoon at GoValients.com Field. 

Westminster snapped a two-game losing streak with the win, improving to 5-3 this season. Manhattanville is 1-7 after dropping its last seven straight. Saturday was the first overtime game in third-year head coach Anthony Accardi's career. 

After playing through scoreless first and second overtime periods, Nigliazzo delivered the game-winner off of an assist from graduate midfielder Jimmy Sentz (Catonsville, Md., Loyola Blakefield). Westminster had a 4-0 margin in shots in the third overtime.

Nigliazzo scored twice and had an assist Saturday. It was the first game-winning score of his career. 

Senior midfielder Gavin Jones (Henrico, Va., Douglas S. Freeman) scored twice, had one assist and added six ground balls and two caused turnovers. Junior attackman Brady Page (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) scored three goals and had two ground balls while Sentz score once and added a pair of assists. 

Senior long-stick Brody McGuinness (Heber City, Utah, Wasatch) had five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Freshman Nolan Grieshaber (Rocklin, Calif., Rocklin) was credited with a career-high 20 saves.

Manhattanville outscored Westminster 4-2 in the fourth quarter, with Nick Corace evening the score at 10-10 with just over four minutes remaining in regulation. Corace led the Valients' offense with five goals. Nick Padovani had eight ground balls and was 10-of-14 at the faceoff X. Joe Ulzheimer finished with 15 saves. 

Manhattanville outshot Westminster 59-50 and had a 30-26 edge in shots on goal. The Titans went 28-of-32 on clears. Both teams had 22 turnovers. 

Up Next:
Westminster will open Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play Saturday at Grove City College. The opening faceoff on Robert E. Thorn Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
