Westminster thumps Hiram

Jones sets all-time points record

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Senior Gavin Jones (Henrico, Va., Douglas S. Freeman) set the program's all-time points record Saturday, leading Westminster College to a 19-2 victory over Hiram College at the UPMC Sports Complex. 

The Titans scored the game's first six goals and went into half leading 15-1. Jones scored three of Westminster's four second half goals.  

Westminster improved to 2-1 with the win. Hiram fell to 0-3.

Jones' record-setting goal came with just over five minutes remaining in regulation, scoring off freshman attackman Jake Spiritoso's (Magnolia, N.J., Sterling) first career assist. He finished the day with a career-best nine points, scoring a career-high eight goals to go along with an assist. The midfielder added seven ground balls and three caused turnovers. He was named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division III Team of Week on Wednesday.

Ryan Greer (2020-23) held the previous program record with 189 points. Through 53 career games (37 starts), Jones currently has 190 points on 140 goals and 50 assists. He is also the program's career goals leader. 

Nine players scored goals Saturday for the Titans. Senior attackman Jonas Clark (Montgomery Village, Md., Watkins Mill) totaled six points on a goal and career-high five assists while freshman attackman Ethan Kurtz (Hummelstown, Pa., Lower Dauphin) fired in three first half goals and added a pair of assists. Graduate midfielder Jimmy Sentz (Catonsville, Md., Loyola Blakefield) had two goals and assist and junior attackman Brady Page (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) scored a goal and added two assists. Freshman attackman Evan Wujek (Kansas City, Mo., Park Hill) scored his first collegiate goal with just over five minutes left in the opening quarter. Sophomore attackman Layne Howe (Lexington Park, Md., Great Mills) netted his first goal of the season with just under five minutes left in the first half while sophomore midfielder Tyler Evangelista (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler) scored his first collegiate goal just over a minute later. Spiritoso netted his first collegiate score 22 seconds into the fourth quarter. 

Junior defenseman Jahiem Hawkins (Huntington Station, N.Y., Huntington) grabbed a career-high eight ground balls and had three caused turnovers while senior long-stick defensive midfielder Brody McGuinness (Heber City, Utah, Wasatch) had one assist, five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Junior Jorden Tate (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) finished with six saves in just over 28 minutes of action. Freshman Nolan Grieshaber (Rocklin, Calif., Rocklin) played the first half without registering a save, improving to 2-1 with the win. 

Freshman Jack Steimle (Mount Sinai, N.Y., Mount Sinai) finished 12-of-13 on faceoffs, had five ground balls and caused a turnover. Freshman Alex Rivera (Ewing, N.J., Notre Dame) won 10-of-12 faceoffs and added four ground balls. 

Westminster put 40 of its 59 shots on goal and was successful on 21 of its 24 clear attempts.

Westminster hits the road next week for a pair of games, traveling to Muskingum University Wednesday (7 p.m.) and Capital University on Saturday (1 p.m.).
