Westminster women capture Senior Recognition Day victory

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's swimming and diving program closed out its regular season Saturday afternoon with a 152.50-97.50 decision over visiting Chatham University in a "mystery" meet inside the Westminster Natatorium.

Seniors Isabella Barnabei (Oakland, N.J., Indian Hills)Lily Hefner (Washington, Pa., Homeschooled)Amber Krebs (Whitewater, Wis., Whitewater)Christina Loewe (Austin, Texas, Veritas Academy)Sara MacMurdo (Pittsburgh, Pa., Carlynton) and Sara Swanson (Avondale, Ariz., Odyssey Institute for Advanced and International Studies (OIAIS)) were recognized prior to the start of the meet.

The College also welcomed back dozens of alumni, family and friends for a special dedication and naming ceremony of the new Gene and Barb Nicholson Pool Deck. 

Westminster opened the 14-event meet with first- and second-place finishes in the 200 medley relay. Freshman Avery O'Sullivan (Washington, Pa., Trinity), sophomore Preslie Bodine (Poland, Ohio, Poland Seminary), sophomore Maddy McClain (Elizabeth, Pa., Elizabeth Forward) and Hefner combined to post a time of 2 minutes, 03.78 seconds for the "A" relay. Freshman Daphne Gindlesperger (McKean, Pa., General McLane), freshman Taylor Moats (Corry, Pa., Corry), sophomore Annabelle Turner (Butler, Pa., Butler) and freshman Izzy Summers (Hubbard, Ohio, Hubbard) made up the "B" relay and scored a time of 2:09.56. 

Westminster had four swimmers with first-place finishes. Krebs was a three-event winner, claiming the 50 freestyle (27.55), the 50 backstroke (31.43) and tying for first place in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.93). McClain won the 200 freestyle (2:10.33) and finished second in the 100 freestyle (1:01.46) while MacMurdo won the 100 backstroke (1:08.66) and was second in the 50 breaststroke (36.01). Moats was a winner in the 100 butterfly (1:12.74). 

Gindlesperger was second in the 50 freestyle (29.49) while Barnabei was second in the 100 backstroke (1:08.71) and 100 IM (1:08.80). Swanson finished second in the 200 freestyle (2:14.78), Summers was second in the 50 butterfly (32.70) and 100 butterfly (1:13.30) and Hefner was second in the 200 IM (2:32.96).

Westminster's 500 crescendo freestyle relay wrapped up the meet with a first-place finish, registering a time of 5:10.99. Members of the relay included Barnabei, MacMurdo, Krebs and Swanson.

Up Next:
Westminster will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at the PAC Championships. The four-day event will once again be held at Grove City College's James E. Longnecker Pool.
