Baseball falls in extras to Muskingum

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College baseball program opened its season with a 5-1, 11-inning loss to visiting Muskingum University Tuesday afternoon. 

Muskingum ran its season record to 4-0 with the win.

Tied 1-1 after nine innings, and after a scoreless 10th, Muskingum erupted for four runs in the 11th. Jackson Duchesne drew a one out, bases-loaded walk that scored Jasper Owens before Sam Palmieri scored on a wild pitch to give the Muskies a 3-1 lead. Weston Melick delivered a two-run single to right field that pushed the lead to 5-1.

Graduate student Kolton Banfi (Harrisville, Pa., Franklin) took a no-decision, allowing an unearned run on three hits with a pair of strikeouts and three walks in 4.0 innings. Junior lefty Josh Reed (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) struck out five while spinning five innings of one-hit relief while junior Tyler Parsons (Hebron, Ky., Conner) threw a hitless 10th. Freshman Jonathan Mollo (Germantown, N.Y., Germantown Central) suffered the loss in his collegiate debut, allowing four runs (4 earned) on four walks. Senior Wyatt Walker (Venetia, Pa., Peters Township) allowed one hit, struck out two and issued a pair of wild pitches in two-thirds of an inning.

Senior designated hitter David Kelly (Gibsonia, Pa., Eden Christian Academy) went 2-for-3 with an 11th-inning double and a sacrifice bunt in the sixth. Senior centerfielder Derek Beach (Titusville, Pa., Titusville) tripled in sophomore third baseman Parker Lyons (Rochester, Pa., Rochester) after his leadoff base hit in the sixth. Fifth-year right fielder Nico Hall (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley), making his Westminster debut, had a one-out single in the fifth. He added a stolen base in the 10th. Senior shortstop Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler) led off the game with a base hit. 

Gavin Schultz earned his second relief victory of the season with a three innings out of the bullpen. He allowed one hit and walked one while striking out eight. Sam Palmieri went 2-for-4 with a walk, a RBI and a run scored. Weston Melick was 1-for-3 with two walks and two RBIs.

Westminster hosts Hiram College (0-0) in a 7-inning, 9-inning doubleheader Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
