Westminster splits with Hiram

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College baseball team secured a non-conference split with visiting Hiram College Wednesday afternoon, falling 19-3 in game one before winning the nightcap 6-3. 

Westminster moved to 1-2 with the split. Wednesday was Hiram's season-opening series. The Terriers will begin competition in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) next year.

Westminster is scheduled to host La Roche University Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m. 


Game 1: Hiram 19, Westminster 3

Hiram turned five hits and an error into eight second-inning runs and extended its lead to 12-2 with six more runs in the fifth. 

Senior third baseman David Kelly (Gibsonia, Pa., Eden Christian Academy) was 2-for-2 with a RBI. Senior Derek Beach (Titusville, Pa., Titusville) had a pinch hit double in the fifth and walked in the seventh. Junior right fielder Andrew Wolf (Dillsburg, Pa., Northern) tripled in the third and walked in the fifth while sophomore centerfielder Quinn Marquis (Hinckley, Ohio, Highland) was 1-for-2 with a RBI groundout in the fifth. Freshman Aaron Jones (Buffalo, N.Y., Canisius) smacked a pinch-hit, one-out double in the sixth and freshman shortstop Thomas Rook (Clarence Center, N.Y., Clarence) singled in the seventh. They were the first career hits for both. 

Senior righty Ryan Gibbons (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) was tagged for loss after allowing eight runs (7 earned) on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 1.2 innings. 

Hal Walker, Jr. went 3-for-5 with a double, five RBIs and a pair of runs scored for Hiram. The Terriers had three players finish with three hits each and drew a combined 12 walks. Jack Conley went five strong to secure the win, giving up two runs (2 earned) on six hits with five strikeouts and a walk. 


Game 2: Westminster 6, Hiram 3
Sophomore right-hander Tyson Djakovich (Hermitage, Pa., Hickory) delivered in game two, firing five scoreless innings and allowing just four hits and walk while striking out five during a 75-pitch start. Senior right-hander Dwight Parker (Youngstown, Ohio, Liberty) struck out a pair in two innings of scoreless relief. 

The Titans jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two and never looking back. 

Graduate second baseman Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. His two-run second inning single pushed the lead to 6-0. Sophomore first baseman Josh Reed (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) was 2-for-4 with a RBI and run scored while Kelly went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. 

Evan Fairbanks was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for Hiram. Nicholas Chernitsky took the loss, giving up six runs (4 earned) on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts in three innings.
