O'Brien's fifth set surge pushes Westminster past Allegheny

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Sophomore Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) had five of her 12 kills in the pivotal fifth set to help power the Westminster College women's volleyball program past defending Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) champion Allegheny Saturday night at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium. 

Westminster, winners of four straight and seven of its last eight, wrapped up its regular season with a 19-10 overall record and a 10-6 league mark.

The College honored its five seniors prior to the opening set Saturday: Angie Nardone (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln)Rachel LaSalvia (Columbus, Pa., Corry)Shelby Rambo (East Palestine, Ohio, Crestview)Charlotte Burgan (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) and Jamie Robertson (Los Angeles, Calif., Palisades Charter).

Allegheny won the opening set 25-20 before Westminster took the second, 25-23. The Gators won the third, 25-20, and the Titans claimed the fourth, 25-21. Westminster raced out to a 7-4 lead in the fifth en route to its 15-10 match-deciding victory. The Titans have played 10 five-set matches this season. Saturday was their fifth five-set win of the year.

Junior Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) finished with a 14-kill, 14-dig double-double. It was her seventh double-double of the year. Trent added a pair of service aces. O'Brien totaled 12 kills, 19 assists and nine digs. Saturday was her seventh double-double this season. LaSalvia and Rambo finished with eight kills apiece. LaSalvia added 13 digs while Rambo had 2.5 total blocks. Robertson chipped in with seven kills and five block assists. 

Nardone finished with 26 assists, 13 digs and two aces. Freshman Halle Albers (Corry, Pa., Corry) had a career-high 20 digs. 

Skyler Fatola hit .371 with 16 kills on 35 attacks for Allegheny. Sydney Kirk had 15 kills while Jacy Diaz finished with 34 digs. 

Up next:
Westminster, the No. 3 seed in the PAC North Division, will travel to Chatham, No. 2 seed in the South, for a PAC Championship Tournament quarterfinal match Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The Cougars (16-8, 11-5 PAC) fell in straight sets to Washington & Jefferson Saturday afternoon.
