Westminster advances with four-set victory at Chatham

PITTSBURGH--Led by sophomore Morgan O'Brien's (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) 13-kill, 26-dig, 22-assist triple-double, the Westminster College women's volleyball program rallied from an opening set loss to secure a 3-1 quarterfinal victory over Chatham in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament Tuesday night at the Athletic & Fitness Center (AFC). 

Winners of five straight and eight of its last nine, Westminster improved to 20-10 this season. 

The No. 3 seed in the PAC North Division, Westminster suffered a 25-23 first set loss to Chatham (16-9), the No. 2 seed in the South, before using a six-point run midway through the second to take the set, 25-19. The Titans ran away with the third set, 25-16, before holding on in the fourth, 25-19. 

Tuesday was O'Brien's fourth triple-double this season. Senior Rachel LaSalvia (Columbus, Pa., Corry) finished with 12 kills and five digs while junior Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) posted a 10-kill, 13-dig double-double. It was her eighth of the year. Senior Charlotte Burgan (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) finished with six kills, 3.5 blocks and five digs while senior Angie Nardone (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) added 18 assists and 13 digs for her seventh double-double this season. Freshmen Halle Albers (Corry, Pa., Corry) and Kylie Anthony (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) chipped in defensively with 14 and 11 digs, respectively. 

Becca Gesner and Vanessa Mleczko had 12 kills apiece for Chatham. 

Up next:
Thursday, Westminster will head to Hiram (25-2), the top seed in the North, for a 7 p.m. semifinal match. Hiram advanced with a 3-1 win over Saint Vincent, the No. 4 seed in the South, Tuesday night.
