Titans drop road matchup at Houghton

HOUGHTON, N.Y.--The Westminster College women's basketball program suffered a 71-63 loss Saturday afternoon at Houghton. 

Westminster (2-3) had a pair of players finish in double figures. Junior Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) scored 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting and went 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Sophomore Maddie Syka (Darlington, Pa., Lincoln Park) finished with 11 points in 17 reserve minutes. She went 4-of-8 from the floor and knocked down 3-of-5 three-point field goal attempts. Syka added four assists, two rebounds and a steal. Sophomore Katie Maryo (Cleveland, Ohio, Magnificat) and freshman Ryen Smith (Fostoria, Ohio, Old Fort) had eight points each. 

Crysta Lacrosse led Houghton (5-0) with 21 points and six rebounds. Tabitha DeVries added 20 points and nine boards. 

Down 34-22 at the half, Westminster outscored Houghton 20-12 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to four, 46-42, heading into the fourth. Cano scored seven third quarter points. A Syka three-pointer with a minute-and-a-half to go in the third gave Westminster a one-point lead, 40-39, but a 7-2 Highlanders' run gave Houghton a 46-42 after three. Maryo's three-pointer to open the fourth cut Houghton's lead to one, 46-45, before an 11-2 spurt stretched the Highlanders' lead to 10, 57-47, with just over six minutes left in regulation. 

Westminster shot 44.2 percent (23-52) from the floor. Houghton finished with a 36-29 advantage on the glass.

Westminster will open Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at Allegheny. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside the David V. Wise Center.
