Westminster women drop PAC opener at Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball program suffered a 69-42 loss at Allegheny in its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener Wednesday night inside the David V. Wise Center. 

Junior Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) and freshman Jenna Zuelch (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) reached double figures for Westminster (2-4, 0-1). Cano went 5-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the free throw line, finishing with 13 points. Zuelch totaled 10 points in 20 reserve minutes, going 4-of-10 from the field and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe. Sophomore Katie Grexa (Hartford, Ohio, Badger) had eight points on 4-of-9 shooting and added five rebounds and four steals. 

Westminster shot a combined 30.4 percent (17-56) from the field, going 1-of-13 (.077) from three three-point line, and hit seven of its 10 (.700) attempted free throws. 

Three scored in double figures for Allegheny (1-4, 1-0), led by Isabella Antonacci's 18-point, six-rebound, seven-assist effort. Sarah Santicola added 17 points and seven boards and Ava Kobus chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds. The Gators had a 47-21 edge on the boards, including a 13-4 advantage on the offensive glass, and outscored the Titans 34-10 in the paint.

Allegheny led 14-8 after one quarter and took an 11-point lead (29-18) into the half. The Gators, behind a 12-0 surge, stretched its lead to 23 (43-20) with just over four minutes to go in the third, and headed into the fourth up 18, 45-27. The Gators went up by as many as 29 (63-34) in the final period before securing the 27-point win.

Westminster will open its PAC home schedule Saturday against Thiel (3-4, 0-1). Tipoff from Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
