Westminster suffers setback to Mount Union

WASHINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball program dropped a 69-58 decision to Mount Union Friday evening at W&J's Hampton Inn by Hilton Women's Basketball Tipoff inside the Salvitti Family Gymnasium. 

Sophomore Katie Maryo (Cleveland, Ohio, Magnificat) was Westminster's lone player in double figures, finishing with 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting while going 3-of-4 from the three-point line. She added six rebounds. Junior Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) had eight points, three rebounds and a pair of assists. Sophomore Maddie Syka (Darlington, Pa., Lincoln Park) added seven points and two rebounds. Junior Kennedy Arison (Medina, Ohio, Akron Hoban) and freshmen Ryen Smith (Fostoria, Ohio, Old Fort) and Jenna Zuelch (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) finished with six apiece. Sophomore Katie Grexa (Hartford, Ohio, Badger) had six boards. 

Bree McCabe finished with 19 points and six rebounds for Mount Union. Chelsea Evanich, Elizabeth Mason and Reese Triplett finished with 10 points each. 

Westminster (1-2) led by as many as seven, 13-6, in the first quarter and went into the second up four, 19-15. Maryo and Cano each had six in the opening quarter. Mount Union, fueled by a 7-0 run three minutes into the second, outscored Westminster 23-16 in the period and went into the break leading by three, 38-35. The Titans shot 50.0 percent (12-24) from the floor and went 6-of-7 (.857) from the line in the opening half. 

An Arison three-pointer with 3:50 to go in the third cut Mount Union's lead to two, 45-43. The Purple Raiders scored the final five points of the period and led by seven, 50-43, heading into the fourth quarter. Mount Union's fourth quarter lead swelled to as many as 19, 69-50, with two-and-a-half minutes remaining. The Titans closed the game on an 8-0 run. 

Mount Union (3-0) finished with a 44-22 advantage in the paint and outrebounded Westminster 38-28.

Westminster will take on Ohio Northern (0-1) Saturday at 2 p.m. in Washington.
