Westminster beats Franciscan in five-setter

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Sophomore Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) recorded her second triple-double of the season Saturday, helping the Westminster College women's volleyball team capture a five-set Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over visiting Franciscan at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Saturday was Westminster's seventh five-set match of the year. It was the program's third win in five-setters. Franciscan won the opening set 25-21 and Westminster took the second 25-21. The Barons edged the Titans in the third, 27-25, before Westminster forced a fifth set with its 25-20 victory in the fourth. Locked up at 10-all in the deciding set, Westminster rattled off five-straight points to earn the win. The fifth featured a total of seven ties and four lead changes.

Westminster moved its overall record to 15-9 and improved to 7-5 in the league. The women's volleyball program dedicated Saturday's match to the life and legacy of Morgan Rodgers, a former Duke University lacrosse student-athlete who died tragically in July 2019 after battling mental health struggles. Morgan's Message was created by her family and former teammates with the mission to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health, normalize the conversations about mental health and ensure that mental health is treated equally to physical health for all student-athletes. The Titans raised over $1,000 in support of the organization.

O'Brien finished with 12 kills, 22 assists and 13 digs. She added a pair of block assists. In a five-set home loss to Hiram on Sept. 24. O'Brien finished with 11 kills, 23 assists and 13 digs. She is the lone PAC player with a triple-double this year. Junior Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) registered her fifth double-double of the season, totaling a season-high 17 kills and 16 digs. Seniors Rachel LaSalvia (Columbus, Pa., Corry) and Shelby Rambo (East Palestine, Ohio, Crestview) each had 10 kills while senior Charlotte Burgan (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) added eight kills and four total blocks.

Senior Angie Nardone (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) dished out 23 assists while helping defensively with nine digs. Freshman Mackenzie Ging (Canton, Ohio, Glenoak) paced the defense with a career-best 28 digs. Freshman Kylie Anthony (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) added 16 digs.

Logan Hickey led Franciscan (9-11, 5-7 PAC) with a 20-kill, 21-dig double-double.
