Westminster drops road tilt at Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa.--The Westminster College football team suffered a 14-7 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) road loss to Grove City Saturday afternoon at Robert E. Thorn Field.

Westminster fell to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the league with Saturday's setback. Grove City, now winners of four straight, improved to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the PAC.

Scoreless at halftime, freshman Beondre Charles (Lake Worth, Fla., Park Vista Community) intercepted Ethan Wiley on Grove City's first scrimmage play to start the second half. It was the first interception of his career. The Titans were unable to capitalize on the turnover on the plus side of the field, turning the ball over on downs at the Wolverines' 38-yard line. Wiley quickly connected with Seth McGroerty on a 61-yard scoring strike to give the Wolverines a 7-0 lead with 11:43 left in the third.

Westminster put together an 11-play, 75-yard drive on its ensuing possession, tying the game at 7-7 when freshman Quentin Goode (Aliquippa, Pa., Aliquippa) tossed a 14-yard touchdown to freshman Lawrence Grayson (Washington, D.C., Paul Laurence Dunbar) with just over five minutes left in the quarter. It was Grayson's first career touchdown. Sophomore Brite Cannon (Parkland, Fla., Monarch) kept the scoring drive alive, snagging a 25-yard completion on a 3rd-and-7 from Westminster's own 42-yard line.

Knotted at 7-7 after three quarters, Chase Rankin broke the tie with a 7-yard scoring run with 6:49 to go in regulation to give Grove City the 14-7 lead. After Westminster managed to force a turnover on downs at their own 21-yard line with just over a half-minute to play, Goode completed a 15-yard pass to sophomore Kristian Bailey (Hollywood, Fla., Hollywood Hills) with 27 seconds to go. He was intercepted by Noah Wheeler on the next play at the Wolverine's 31-yard line. It was Wheeler's third interception of the year.

Westminster outgained Grove City 253-141, including a 196-93 advantage in passing yards, had a 13-6 edge in first downs and finished with a 35:13-24:47 advantage in time of possession.

Goode, making his second career start, finished 18-of-38 for 196 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. He was sacked three times. Goode completed passes to six different receivers Saturday, hooking up with senior Demere White (Manalapan, N.J., DePaul Catholic) five times for 27 yards. Grayson finished with four catches for 38 yards and a score.

Junior Clayton Cannon (Parkland, Fla., Marjory Stoneman Douglas) rushed 23 times for 70 yards.

Senior Dylan Sleva (McDonald, Pa., Moon) registered 11 tackles (2 solo) and a sack. It was his fourth game of the year with 10 or more tackles. Senior Marcus Finkley (Youngstown, Ohio, East) finished with a career-high nine stops (4 solo). Sophomore Lawrence Kasanzale II (Aliquippa, Pa., Hopewell) had a career-high six tackles (3 solo) and classmate Wes Donner (Bastrop, Texas, Bastrop) added five tackles (2 solo) and a tackle for loss. Kasanzale and Donner also halved a sack.

Wiley completed 4-of-9 passes for 84 yards with one touchdown and one interception for Grove City. Rankin ran 21 times for 49 yards and a score. McGroerty caught four passes for 84 yards and a touchdown.
