Westminster cruises to 57-21 win over Allegheny

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Junior Clayton Cannon (Parkland, Fla., Marjory Stoneman Douglas) ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns while sophomore Lamont Austin (Sharon, Pa., Sharon) snagged a pair of interceptions, helping Westminster College secure a 57-21 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over visiting Allegheny Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field inside Harold Burry Stadium.

Westminster improved to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in the PAC. Saturday marked the Titans' fourth-straight win over the Gators.

Cannon finished with 19 carries. His first touchdown, a 1-yard score, tied the game at 7-all with 6:40 to go in the first. His second, a 7-yard score, stretched the Titans' lead to 26-14 lead with just under six to go in the half. It was Cannon's second 100-plus yard rushing game this season.

The Titans went into halftime leading 29-21 after sophomore Andrew Caranna (Copley, Ohio, Revere) hit from 29 yards out at the end of the first half. He was true on all three field goal attempts. His first, a 21-yarder, cut Allegheny's lead to 14-10 with 1:18 left in the opening quarter. He drilled a career-long 39-yarder with 11:30 to go in the second, giving Westminster a 17-14 edge. Saturday was Caranna's second three field goal game of his career: he hit three last November against Grove City.

Westminster outscored Allegheny 28-0 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, holding the Gators to 82 total offensive yards in the second half.

Senior Demere White (Manalapan, N.J., DePaul Catholic) rushed 12 times for 80 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown with 9:45 left in the third. Freshman Jaxon Covell (Titusville, Pa., Titusville) ran eight times for 33 yards. He scored his first career touchdown on a 1-yard plunge with 11:37 left in the fourth. Junior Jake Miller (Pittsburgh, Pa., McKeesport) ran for 4-yard touchdown to close out the scoring. It was the first touchdown of Miller's career.

Westminster also ran for five touchdowns in its 42-7 win over Allegheny in Meadville last season. The Titans rushed 46 times for 251 yards on Saturday.

Freshman Quentin Goode (Aliquippa, Pa., Aliquippa) finished 15-of-25 passing for 292 yards and two touchdowns. He connected with sophomore Brite Cannon (Parkland, Fla., Monarch) on a 45-yard pass with 13:02 to go in the second before hooking up with sophomore Kristian Bailey (Hollywood, Fla., Hollywood Hills) on a 42-yard score with 7:34 left in the third.

Cannon had a career-high eight catches for 136 yards and a score. It was his third game this season with 100-plus receiving yards. The receiving touchdown was Cannon's sixth this year. Bailey registered three catches for 60 yards and a touchdown.

Senior Dylan Sleva (McDonald, Pa., Moon) paced the defense with eight tackles (4 solo), a tackle for loss and an interception, the fourth of his career. Senior Jack Bible (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) added seven stops (3 solo) while senior Marcus Finkley (Youngstown, Ohio, East) chipped in with five (4 solo). Senior Jean Garry Joseph (North Miami, Fla., Ebenezer Christian) totaled three tackles (1 solo) and had 1.5 sacks.

Austin intercepted Nick Barker on the Gators' first play from scrimmage in the second quarter and again with just over eight minutes left in the third quarter. It was the first two interception game of his career.

Westminster outgained Allegheny, 562-357.
