Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Titans blank Clarion to open season

CLARION, Pa.--The Westminster College women's tennis program opened its 2024-25 season Sunday afternoon with a 7-0 shutout victory at PennWest Clarion and the Campbell Courts. 

It was the season-opening match for both schools. 

Senior Gia Francisco (Canfield, Ohio, Canfield) and junior Christine Rossi (Jefferson Hills, Pa., Thomas Jefferson) opened with a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles. The pair went 12-4 last season. Seniors Ryleigh Valone (Erie, Pa., Villa Maria Academy) and Emma Sukal (Pittsburgh, Pa., Baldwin) picked up a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles while sophomore Emma Overlingas (Pittsburgh, Pa., Baldwin) and senior Taylor Dlugozima (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) won 6-0 at No. 3 doubles. Sukal, a First Team All-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) pick in 2022 and 2023, returns after missing all of the 2023-24 season. Overlingas and Dlugozima combined to go 12-3 a season ago. 

Francisco earned a 4-6, 7-5, 12-10 win at No. 1 singles over Davan Lion while Rossi registered a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Josie Beckerleg at No. 2 singles. Valone posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles over Stephanie Juarez and Sukal scored a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Polia Vladeva at No. 4 singles. Overlingas won 6-1, 6-1 over Taelyn Thomas at No. 5 singles and sophomore Morgan Allen (Johnstown, Pa., Westmont Hilltop) rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles over Caidyn Demchak

Westminster opens its PAC slate Tuesday against rival Geneva College at Brady's Run Park in Patterson Heights.
