Westminster men 5th at Northeast Elite

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.--The Westminster College men's golf program sits in fifth place after Saturday's opening round of the Northeast Elite, which is being hosted by Penn College.

The 20-team, two-round event is being played at the Williamsport Country Club, the premier private country club in the North Central/Lycoming County region. Trinity College (Conn.) leads the field with a two-under 282. The University of Rochester is in second place (285) while Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) is third (286). Franklin & Marshall College is fourth (288), followed by Westminster (289).

Hamilton College's Ramon Aroca Gonzalez and Penn College's Peyton Mussina are pacing the 104-player field with an opening-round four-under 67.

Senior Ellian Ascencio (Venetia, Pa., Peters Township) is one of five players tied for eighth place after carding a one-under 70. Graduate student Kai Haseyama (Encinitas, Calif., San Dieguito Academy) is tied with eight other players for 19th after his one-over 72. Sophomore Tyler Hager (Lehighton, Pa., Palmerton) is one of 14 tied for 28th with a 73 while seniors Joseph Trudeau (Ann Arbor, Mich., Skyline) and Gavin Batdorff (Berlin Center, Ohio, South Range) are tied for 42nd with opening-round 74's.

Sunday's second round is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. Westminster's five will begin at 12:30 p.m.
