Women's volleyball sweeps in home opener

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's volleyball program registered a straight-set victory in its home opener Tuesday night against Penn State Shenango at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Set scores were 25-11, 25-17 and 25-22. 

Westminster improved to 8-4 this season with the win. Friday and Saturday, Westminster is co-hosting an eight-team tournament with Grove City College. The Titans host Thiel College Friday at 4 p.m. and The College of Wooster at 8 p.m. 

Junior outside hitter Rachel Brady (Columbus, Pa., Corry) had nine kills and hit .421. She added four assists and six digs. Sophomore outside hitter Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) finished with eight kills and hit .235 in the three-set win. She added 15 digs. Junior setter Angie Nardone (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) had a 15-assist, 10-dig double-double, her third straight double-double this season. 

Cyra Cross led the Lions with nine kills and 10 digs. Carla Ramirez Ortiz finished with 16 assists and 10 digs.  

Westminster hit a combined .241 and limited Penn State Shenango to just .079 hitting. The Titans scored a dominant first set win, hitting .429 with 18 kills to just three errors, and put together four runs of four or more points. Twenty-three players made an appearance tonight.
