Westminster splits a pair Friday

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The women's volleyball program split a pair of matches Friday at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium, falling to Thiel College in five sets before snagging a four-set win over The College of Wooster in the nightcap of the opening day of the Westminster-Grove City Invitational. 

Westminster pushed its record to 9-5 this season. Thiel won 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 16-25 and 16-14. Westminster downed Wooster 18-25, 25-17, 25-15 and 25-21. 

Saturday, Westminster takes on Fredonia State at 12 p.m. before closing out the two-day event with a match against Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Saint Vincent College at 4 p.m.

Trailing two sets to one, a six-point run midway through the fourth fueled the Titans' 25-16 set win. Senior right side Ava Ferringer (Venus, Pa., Cranberry) and sophomore outside hitter Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) had three kills apiece in the third. In the fourth, Thiel rattled off four-straight points to go up 14-13. A Tomcat attack error evened the match at 14 apiece before a Daisy Jenness kill and Titan attack error gave Thiel the two-point set win.

Ferringer led Westminster with 12 kills, four digs and four blocks. Trent finished with 11 kills and a career-high 32 digs while Brady added 11 kills and 17 digs. Junior setter Angie Nardone (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) registered a 29-assist, 12-dig double-double while freshman setter Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) chipped in with 12 assists, eight digs and three service aces. Freshman libero Brooke Gecina (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) had a career-high 31 digs. 

Jenness led Thiel with a career-high 28 kills and 19 digs. Carlie Reynolds finished with 43 assists and 17 digs while Danielle Aulet had 32 digs.

Wooster stormed out to a convincing 25-18 first set victory before Westminster secured set wins in the second, third and fourth. Brady finished with 13 kills and a career-high 19 digs while Ferringer added 12 kills. O'Brien put together a career-high 19-assist, 15-dig double-double and Nardone chipped in with 15 assists and 10 digs. Gecina added 28 digs. 

Tamara Turner had 11 kills and 11 digs for Wooster.
