Titans finish third at Olivet

BATTLE CREEK, Mich.--The Westminster College men's golf team finished third at the two-day Lou Collins Memorial Tournament, hosted by the University of Olivet at Bedford Valley Country Club in Battle Creek, Mich.

The Titans finished with a two-day team score of 616, following up Friday's 299 with a 317 Saturday. Trine University won the 10-team event with a 603. Washington & Jefferson College was second (605). Olivet's Zachary Pier shot an even-par 144 (73-71) to claim medalist honors.

Graduate student Joseph Trudeau (Ann Arbor, Mich., Skyline) tied for seventh place with a seven-over 151. He shot an 81 Saturday after firing a two-under 70 on Friday. Seniors Gavin Batdorff (Berlin Center, Ohio, South Range), Portland Canovali (Pittsburgh, Pa., North Allegheny) and Peter Canovali (Pittsburgh, Pa., North Allegheny), who was competing as an individual, all finished with 154s and tied for 12th place. Sophomore Tyler Hager (Lehighton, Pa., Palmerton) tied for 22nd with a 157 (77-80). Senior Ellian Ascencio (Venetia, Pa., Peters Township) tied for 45th with a 164 (81-83).

On Saturday, Westminster's reserves competed at the Pitt-Bradford Kickoff Classic, which was played at The Pennhills Club in Bradford. The Titans finished third in the eight-team field with a team score of 314, four strokes off leaders Pitt-Greensburg and Pitt-Bradford, which finished with a team score of 310. Pitt-Greensburg won the team title on a tiebreak. Graduate student Kai Haseyama (Encinitas, Calif., San Dieguito Academy) fired a two-over 73 to earn medalist in the 50-player field.

Westminster is scheduled to compete in the Mountain Valley Collegiate Classic Friday-Saturday, Sept. 6-7. The two-day event is being co-hosted by Penn State Altoona and Mount Aloysius College. Friday's round will be played at Sinking Valley Country Club in Altoona while Saturday's round will be played at the Summit Country Club in Cresson.
