Westminster sweeps Bethany on Senior Recognition Day

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College baseball program secured a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) sweep against Bethany College to cap off the regular season Saturday afternoon. The Titans posted a come-from-behind 3-2, 10-inning win in game one before cruising to a 9-4 game two victory.

Saturday was also Senior Recognition Day in New Wilmington.

Westminster improved to 18-20 overall and 11-9 in league play. Bethany fell to 10-28 overall and 3-17 in the PAC. With Saturday's sweep, Westminster has earned a spot in this year's PAC Championship Tournament. The six-team championship tournament, scheduled for Wednesday-Saturday, May 8-11, will be hosted by top-seeded Washington & Jefferson College at Ross Memorial Park in North Franklin Township.

Game One: Westminster 3, Bethany 2 (10 inn.)
Senior righty Kolton Banfi (Harrisville, Pa., Franklin) was stingy in his game one no-decision. He went seven innings and allowed two runs (1 earned) on eight hits with no walks and a season-high nine strikeouts. Sophomore right-hander Tyler Parsons (Hebron, Ky., Conner) threw a scoreless 10th to earn the win, his second of the year.

Down 2-0 after four, sophomore first baseman Josh Reed (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) delivered a two-out, two-run double in the fifth that scored senior designated hitter Jake Dockum (Fairport, N.Y., Allendale Columbia) and senior catcher Chase Tomko (Hermitage, Pa., West Middlesex).

After Parsons' scoreless top of the 10th, senior second baseman Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) drew a one-out walk, stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error. With two outs and freshman pinch hitter Parker Lyons (Rochester, Pa., Rochester) at the plate, Murgenovich scored the game-winning run on a throwing error.

Westminster had just three hits in the win. Murgenovich singled in the sixth and junior shortstop Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler) had a single in the eighth.

Game Two: Westminster 9, Bethany 4
Westminster rattled off six runs and batted around to get things going in first, with Lyons contributing a key two-out, two-run double. Tomko had a two-out RBI single in the second before Murgenovich's sacrifice fly in the fourth extended the lead to 8-1. Senior center fielder Matthew Randza (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to go up 9-1.

Payton Zupko highlighted Bethany's three-run eighth with a two-run home run.

Senior third baseman Donald Shimko (Greensburg, Pa., Greater Latrobe) went 3-for-3. It was his second three-hit game this season. Junior left fielder Chris Davis (San Francisco, Calif., Stuart Hall) went 2-for-5 with a triple and a run scored. Randza was 2-for-4 and scored twice. Dockum went 2-for-5 with a run scored.

Junior right-hander Ryan Gibbons (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) threw seven strong innings to secure his third win of the season. He allowed one run on six hits with five strikeouts and not walks. Reed threw a scoreless ninth inning.

Tyler McKee went 4-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored for the Bison.
