Titans fall in opening round of PAC Championship Tournament

No. 2 Grove City scores 4-0 win

WASHINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College baseball team suffered a 4-0 loss to Grove City College in the opening round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament Wednesday afternoon. 

The league's six-team, double-elimination championship is being held Wednesday-Saturday at Washington & Jefferson College's Ross Memorial Park in North Franklin Township, Pa. W&J is the tournament's No. 1 seed. 

Grove City, the tournament's No. 2 seed, improved to 25-12 this season. Westminster, the No. 5 seed, fell to 18-21. Grove City will face the winner of No. 3 Waynesburg University and No. 4 Allegheny College Thursday at 6 p.m. Westminster will meet No. 6 Thiel College in the tournament's first elimination game Thursday at 11 a.m.

Westminster managed just three hits in the loss. Senior third baseman Donald Shimko (Greensburg, Pa., Greater Latrobe) was 1-for-1 with a pair of walks. Junior left fielder Chris Davis (San Francisco, Calif., Stuart Hall) went 1-for-3 while fifth-year right fielder Carter Chinn (Grove City, Pa., Grove City) finished 1-for-4. 

Senior righty Kolton Banfi (Harrisville, Pa., Franklin) fell to 4-5 this season with the loss. He gave up four runs (3 earned) on 12 hits with no walks and two strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Sophomore left-hander Josh Reed (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) retired the final batter in the seventh while sophomore right-hander Tyler Parsons (Hebron, Ky., Conner) struck out three batters in the eighth. 

Grove City's Nick Guidas threw eight scoreless innings, walking two and striking out eight. Sam DiStefano went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored. Caison Holland, Josh Minnich and Markus Williams each had two hits and an RBI. 

Scoreless through four innings, Grove City got on the board with an unearned run in the fifth. Five-straight two-out base hits in the seventh led to three more runs.
