Titans roll into championship series with win over Waynesburg

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College softball program, fueled by a five-run third inning, held on for a 7-4 victory over No. 6 Waynesburg University in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament Friday afternoon to advance to Saturday's championship round.

This is the third-straight year Westminster earned the top seed in the championship tournament. The Titans won their first and only PAC title in 2005.

Westminster improved to 24-10 with the win. Waynesburg, the winner of two-straight PAC championships, fell to 21-17. Friday's loss snapped an eight-game winning streak in the league's championship tournament.

Second-seeded Allegheny College and No. 6 Waynesburg will meet in an elimination game Saturday at 11 a.m. for the right to face the Titans in the championship round, which will begin at 1 p.m. Westminster would win the PAC title with a victory in the 1 p.m. game. A Westminster loss in the 1 p.m. game would trigger the "if necessary" game, which is currently scheduled for 3 p.m.

Back-to-back run-scoring singles by graduate pitcher Madison Brown (Lisbon, Ohio, East Liverpool) and freshman shortstop Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) in the first staked the Titans to a 2-0 lead before RBI doubles by the Jackets' Emma Bliss and Ella Brookman in the third and fourth innings, respectively, tied the game at 2-all.

Westminster struck for five runs in the third to chase Waynesburg starter Sydney Wilson after three innings. She allowed seven runs on 10 hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts.

Five-straight batters reached safely to start the inning for the Titans, with senior second base Liz Malczak (Grove City, Pa., Grove City) leading off with a double. Brown followed with an RBI single before Karpa was hit by a pitch. Junior center fielder Sydney Lokay (North Huntington, Pa., Norwin) drove in fifth-year first base Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, Pa., Laurel), who singled after Malczak's two-base hit. Freshman catcher Faith Jones' (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) RBI groundout scored freshman Ashley DeCarbo (New Castle, Pa., Shenango), a pinch runner for Brown, before freshman left fielder Leah Taliani (Arnold, Pa., Valley) ripped her first career triple to center and scored Lokay. Junior designated player Mia Meholick (Dubois, Pa., Dubois Central Catholic) closed out the frame with a run-scoring single that plated Taliani.

Breanna Rice's two-run single for the Jackets in the seventh closed out the scoring.

Westminster had 10 hits in the win. Malczak went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, marking her 11th multi-hit game this season. Brown was 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Lokay drew a pair of walks, had an RBI and scored a run. Brown upped her season record to 11-5 in the circle, giving up two runs on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout in 6.1 innings.

Wilson fell to 11-6 with the loss. Brook and Bliss each went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI for Waynesburg.
