Conference champs!: Titans win PAC title

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College softball program won its first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) title in 19 years after knocking off No. 6 Waynesburg University 1-0 in the championship tournament's title game Saturday evening. Freshman shortstop Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) delivered the game-winning base hit in the bottom of the seventh inning.

As the winner of this year's PAC tournament title, Westminster secured the league's automatic qualifying bid to the Division III Championship, with teams and regional site selections to be announced Monday, May 13. Regional round play is scheduled for Friday-Sunday, May 17-19 and the Super Regionals will be played Friday-Saturday, May 24-25.

Westminster improved to 25-11 with the win. Waynesburg, winners of PAC titles in 2022 and 2023, fell to 23-18. The Yellow Jackets forced the "if-necessary" game after dealing the Titans a 5-2, 11-inning loss in the championship series opener Saturday afternoon after handing No. 2 Allegheny College a 4-2, nine-inning loss to get things going Saturday morning.

Graduate student Madison Brown (Lisbon, Ohio, East Liverpool), senior Liz Malczak (Grove City, Pa., Grove City), junior Sydney Lokay (North Huntington, Pa., Norwin) and Karpa each earned spots on the PAC's All-Tournament Team. It was the second-straight year Brown and Malczak were named all-tournament selections. Malczak was also recognized as the championship tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

Game J: Waynesburg 5, Westminster 2 (11 inn.)
With Waynesburg down 2-1 with two outs in the top of the seventh, Ella Brookman delivered a solo home run to right field that evened the game at 2-all. After scoreless eighth, ninth and 10th innings, the Jackets plated three runs in the 11th when Breanna Rice followed up Trinity Edge's RBI single and Kassidy Trimble's sacrifice fly with a run-scoring triple.

Edge won her fifth game of the year after throwing eight innings in relief of starter Autumn Stemple. Edge allowed one run on seven hits. She walked seven and hit a pair of batters. Stemple gave an unearned run in two innings. Sydney Wilson posted her fourth save of the spring after throwing a scoreless 11th inning.

Fifth-year first base Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, Pa., Laurel) went 2-for-5 with a walk and an RBI. Her one-out, RBI single to left in the third inning gave Westminster a 2-1 lead. Sophomore third base Ellie Hsieh (York, Pa., Central York) was 2-for-6 with a double and an RBI while Lokay finished 2-for-5 with walk and a double. Junior designated player Mia Meholick (Dubois, Pa., Dubois Central Catholic) had a two-out triple in the eighth. It was her fourth triple of the season.

Brown fell to 11-6 this season with loss. She allowed five runs (4 earned) on 15 hits with three walks and four strikeouts in 10.2 innings. Freshman Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) struck out Emma Bliss to end the 11th.

Brookman led Waynesburg with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. She had a double, a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. She also walked twice.

Game K: Westminster 1, Waynesburg 0
Malczak, now 12-5 this season, was elite in the circle for Westminster throughout the championship-clinching victory. She allowed eight hits and a pair of walks while striking out three in the shutout. Malczak stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the sixth. Offensively, she added a bunt base hit in the seventh that pushed Hsieh, who scored the eventual game-winning run after reaching on a throwing error to lead off the inning, into scoring position.

Before the game-winning single, Karpa grounded out in the second and hit into a double play in the fifth. The walk-off was her fourth this season.

Hsieh had a base hit in the first and Brown singled to lead off the fifth. Westminster finished with just four base hits.

Alyssa Rager went 2-for-3 with a stolen base for Waynesburg. Bella DeMark walked and had a double in the third. Wilson took the loss, falling to 11-7 this season. She allowed one run (0 earned) on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
