Jones pours in career high seven goals in victory

Junior hits 100 career goals in win over Franciscan

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Westminster College junior midfielder Gavin Jones (Henrico, Va., Douglas S. Freeman) scored a career-high seven goals in Wednesday night's 22-6 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Franciscan University at the UPMC Sports Complex.

Westminster, winners of four-straight games, improved to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in conference action. Franciscan fell to 7-4 overall and 0-2 in the league. The Titans are 8-0 in their all-time series with the Barons. 

Jones, who reached 100 career goals on his man-up score with 13 minutes left in the fourth quarter, finished with eight points on his seven goals and one assist. Senior attack Payton Waight (Ithaca, N.Y., Ithaca) scored five goals and had a pair of assists. He has six or more points in three of the Titans' last four. Waight currently sits in third place on the program's all-time points list with 150.

Sophomore attack Brady Page (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) had five goals and an assist. It was his first game with five goals since a win over visiting Chatham University on April 25, 2023. Senior midfielder Jimmy Sentz (Catonsville, Md., Loyola Blakefield) had two goals and three assists and tied his career high with six ground balls. Junior midfielder Jonas Clark (Montgomery Village, Md., Watkins Mill) chipped in with a goal and a career-high three assists. He has posted three or more points in four-straight games. Senior midfielder Kellen Frazer (Eugene, Ore., Oak Hill) registered the first three-point game of his career, finishing with a pair of goals and an assist, while junior defender Geoffrey Worsey (Frederick, Md., Tuscarora) has scored in back-to-back games with his goal late in the third quarter. Senior long-stick midfielder Ryan Romero (Port Matilda, Pa., State College) assisted on Page's goal with 4:24 to go in the first half, his first since April 27, 2022 at Franciscan. 

Senior Colin O'Malley (Pittsburgh, Pa., North Allegheny) won a career-high 27 faceoffs (of 31) and tied his career high with 13 ground balls. Junior defender David Evangelista (Pittsburgh, Pa., Chartiers Valley) had four caused turnovers and three ground balls while senior defender Aaron Alderette (Bethel Park, Pa., Bethel Park) finished with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Freshman attack Nathan Covey (Sarver, Pa., Freeport) had an assist, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. 

Sophomore Jorden Tate (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) made eight saves to improve to 6-2 this season. 

Joseph James led Franciscan with five goals. Richard Vale III finished with 27 saves. 

Westminster, up 6-0 after one quarter, outscored Franciscan 8-1 in the second and led by 13, 14-1, at halftime. Page scored four first half goals. Jones scored three of his seven in the second quarter. Fueled by two-goal third quarters by Jones and Waight, Westminster led 20-5 going into the fourth. Jones scored back-to-back goals to open the fourth.

Westminster outshot Franciscan 83-35 and finished with a 50-14 advantage in shots on goal. The Titans caused 17 of the Barons' 26 turnovers.

Saturday, Westminster will travel to Allegheny College. The opening faceoff from Frank B. Fuhrer Field in Meadville is scheduled for 7 p.m.
