Westminster edged at Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa.--The Westminster College men's lacrosse team was edged by Allegheny College 18-11 in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup at Frank B. Fuhrer Field Saturday night. 

Allegheny improved to 5-5 overall and 3-0 in the PAC. Westminster fell to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the league. 

Junior midfielder Gavin Jones (Henrico, Va., Douglas S. Freeman) totaled four goals and two assists and added seven ground balls and two caused turnovers. Senior attack Payton Waight (Ithaca, N.Y., Ithaca) registered two goals and two assists and had a ground ball. Senior midfielder Jimmy Sentz (Catonsville, Md., Loyola Blakefield) and sophomore attack Brady Page (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) each had two goals. Sentz added three ground balls and two caused turnovers and Page had a ground ball. Senior midfielder Kellen Frazer (Eugene, Ore., Oak Hill) scored a goal. 

Senior faceoff Colin O'Malley (Pittsburgh, Pa., North Allegheny) went 13-for-30 on the dot and finished with 11 ground balls and one caused turnover. Junior midfielder Jonas Clark (Montgomery Village, Md., Watkins Mill) totaled two assists and had six ground balls. Sophomore short-stick defensive midfielder Asher Silberling (Redondo Beach, Calif., Redondo Union) had four ground balls and three caused turnovers while sophomore short-stick defensive midfielder Jahiem Hawkins (Huntington Station, N.Y., Huntington) posted three ground balls and three caused turnovers. 

Sophomore goalkeeper Jorden Tate (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) started the game and made nine saves in 22 minutes. Senior goalkeeper Bradley Green (Landisville, Pa., Hempfield) made five saves in 38:07. 

JP Rakis paced the Gators with four goals and three assists. Jack Cushwa had four goals and four ground balls. Garin Stearns totaled 21 saves in the win. 

Allegheny jumped out to a commanding 8-0 lead in the opening quarter. Page, Waight, Jones and Frazer each scored in the second with the Titans trailing 12-4 at halftime. Westminster outscored Allegheny 5-3 in the third, with Jones scoring two and Sentz, Waight, and Page each scoring a goal. Jones and Sentz scored back-to-back goals to start the fourth, cutting Allegheny's lead down to 15-11. Rakis scored with under three minutes left in regulation and Cushwa's man-down goal with just over a minute remaining closed out the scoring. 

Allegheny finished with 55 shots while Westminster had 54. Both teams had 32 shots on goal. The Titans caused 16 of the Gators' 27 turnovers. 

Westminster travels to conference rival Saint Vincent College on Wednesday. The opening faceoff at UPMC Field is scheduled for 4 p.m.
