Westminster women edged at home by Grove City

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's lacrosse team suffered a 15-12 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss to Grove City College Wednesday evening at the UPMC Sports Complex. 

Grove City improved to 12-4 overall and 7-1 in the PAC. Westminster fell to 4-10 overall and 3-5 in the conference. 

Sophomore midfielder Emma Brazier (Northport, N.Y., Northport) scored a game-high six goals. It was her fourth game this year with six or more goals. Senior midfielder Nina Rascona (Somerset, Pa., Somerset) had four goals and five draw controls. Brazier and Rascona each went 2-for-3 on free position shots. 

Senior midfielder Samantha Reed (Zionsville, Pa., Emmaus) had a goal and an assist to go along with two ground balls and four draw controls. Sophomore defender Isabella Cespedes (Merrick, N.Y., Sanford H. Calhoun) totaled four ground balls and three draw controls while junior defender Shea O'Donnell (Hatfield, Pa., Lansdale Catholic) had four ground balls and a caused turnover.

Junior Jade Hromanik (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shaler) finished with 14 saves.

Madison Nazigian led Grove City with four goals and four assists. She added two ground balls, four caused turnovers and 13 draw controls. 

Grove City, up 3-2 after one, outscored Westminster 6-3 in the second to to go into the half up four, 9-5. Nazigian had two second quarter goals for Grove City. Brazier had a pair of second quarter scores for Westminster. 

Brazier scored the first goal of the second half three and a half minutes into the third. Grove City responded with four-straight goals from Jackie Rowell, Taylor Blythe, Nazigian and Gwen Shilling. Brazier's goal with under a minute to go in the period cut the Wolverines' lead to six, 13-7. Rascona, sophomore attack Haley Wenzel (Coppell, Texas, Coppell) and Brazier netted three-straight goals to start the fourth, trimming Grove City's lead to three, 13-10, with just over 10 minutes remaining. Lucy Martin and Blythe scored back-to-back goals to push the Wolverines' lead to five, 15-10. Rascona netted the final two goals of the game.

Grove City outshot Westminster 40-28 and finished with a 29-22 edge in shots on goal. Westminster was 24-of-30 on clear attempts. Grove City went 22-of-24. 

Westminster will conclude its PAC regular season Saturday at home against Waynesburg University. The opening draw is scheduled for 3 p.m.
