Reed's 3-run homer lifts Titans to victory

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.--Sophomore first baseman Josh Reed (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) delivered a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth to help the Westminster College baseball team secure a 7-6 come-from-behind win over New England College at The Ripken Experience® Thursday morning.

Thursday's game was played at the Griffith Field complex.

Freshman right-hander Jon Albers (Corry, Pa., Corry) spun 1.2 innings of relief to secure the win, the first of his collegiate career. He allowed one run (1 earned) on two hits and struck out a pair. Junior left-hander Jake Vitale (New Castle, Pa., Union) got the start and shined through six shutout innings, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out eight.

Three-straight hitters reached to start the three-run third, which was keyed by senior second baseman Logan Murgenovich's (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) run-scoring double. Junior shortstop Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler) and senior catcher Chase Tomko (Hermitage, Pa., West Middlesex) had sacrifice flies in the inning.

A two-run single by Johnny Cannavo in the seventh and a four-run eighth, highlighted by Brett Patnode's three-run triple, propelled New England to a two-run lead going into the bottom of the frame. Reed's one-out homer scored senior center fielder Matthew Randza (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk), who led off with a walk, and junior Derek Beach (Titusville, Pa., Titusville), who ran for freshman pinch hitter Quinn Marquis (Hinckley, Ohio, Highland) after he reached on a fielder's choice.

Senior third baseman Donald Shimko (Greensburg, Pa., Greater Latrobe) went 3-for-4 with a double. It was the first three-hit game of his career. Murgenovich went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Fifth-year right fielder Carter Chinn (Grove City, Pa., Grove City) reached base three times. His first inning double was his second extra-base hit this year.

Patnode went 2-for-3 with a triple, a walk, three RBIs and a run scored for New England. He also reached on a hit by pitch in the top of the first.

Westminster will wrap up its five-game swing at The Ripken Experience
® Friday with games at the Ebbets Field complex against Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) at 9 a.m. and Manhattanville College at 12:30 p.m.
