Westminster drops a pair

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.--The Westminster College baseball team lost its final two games at The Ripken Experience® Friday, dropping a 3-2 decision to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in the opener before falling to Manhattanville College 6-2 in the nightcap at the Ebbets Field Complex.

Westminster went 3-2 on its trip to South Carolina and returns north with a 4-5 overall record. WPI has won its first seven games to start the season while Manhattanville evened its spring record at 1-1 with Friday's win.

Westminster hosts Heidelberg University Wednesday. The first pitch of the single, nine-inning game is set for 3 p.m.

Game 1: WPI 3, Westminster 2
WPI, with two outs in the top of the first, scratched out a run on three-straight singles against Westminster right-hander Kolton Banfi (Harrisville, Pa., Franklin). Scoreless over the next six innings, four-straight WPI hitters reached to start the eighth. A bases-loaded hit by pitch drawn by Joe DiMichele and RBI groundout by pinch hitter Matt Shea upped the Engineers lead to 3-0.

Senior third baseman Donald Shimko (Greensburg, Pa., Greater Latrobe) and senior second baseman Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) both drew walks from Damon Chase before fifth-year right fielder Carter Chinn (Grove City, Pa., Grove City) drove in both with a two-run single to right to trim the lead to one, 3-2. Junior Derek Beach (Titusville, Pa., Titusville), inserted as a pinch runner for Chinn, was erased after Chase induced a fielder's choice against senior catcher Chase Tomko (Hermitage, Pa., West Middlesex) to record the final out.

Banfi fell to 1-2 with the hard-luck loss, allowing one run (1 earned) on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Senior righty Trevor Leighty (Wooster, Ohio, Wooster) and freshman right-hander Nick Magnifico (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) each walked one in scoreless eighth and ninth innings. Chinn finished 1-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs. Tomko went 1-for-3 with a pair of hit by pitches while Randa finished 1-for-3 with a hit by pitch. Shimko went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Murgenovich was 0-for-3 with two walks and a run scored.

Noah Pins picked up the win in relief, allowing a hit and two walks with three strikeouts in three scoreless innings. Chase earned the save after allowing two runs (2 earned) on a hit with two walks and a strikeout in one inning.

Game 2: Manhattanville 6, Westminster 2
Scoreless through four innings, Chinn singled to open the fifth and sophomore designated hitter David Kelly (Gibsonia, Pa., Eden Christian Academy) followed with a double. Shimko staked the Titans to a 2-0 lead later in the frame with a two-out, two-run single. After another two scoreless innings, the Valiants sent eight men to the plate in the eighth, scoring five runs on six hits. Chris Goohs' two-run double to left field broke the inning open. Joseph McDonald's RBI single in the ninth closed out the scoring.

Manhattanville outhit Westminster 15-5. Ryan McCann went 5.1 innings to secure the win, allowing two runs (2 earned) on five hits with three strikeouts. Gregory Esposito worked the final 3.2 innings to earn the save. He struck out six. McDonald and Joshua Gillison both finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

Junior right-hander Ryan Gibbons (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) worked five innings in the no decision, scattering four hits and a pair of walks while fanning five. Sophomore lefty Josh Reed (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs (3 earned) on five hits with a pair of strikeouts in two innings. Sophomore right-hander Tyler Parsons (Hebron, Ky., Conner) struck out the side in the ninth.
