Westminster upended at home

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's lacrosse program suffered a 12-11 loss to visiting Alfred University Wednesday evening at the UPMC Sports Complex. 

Alfred evened its record at 2-2. Westminster fell to 0-2. 

Senior midfielder Nina Rascona (Somerset, Pa., Somerset) led Westminster offensively, scoring five goals for the second time in as many games. She added a ground ball, three caused turnovers and three draw controls and finished 2-of-5 on free position shots. Sophomore midfielder Emma Brazier (Northport, N.Y., Northport) finished with two goals and an assist and added four ground balls, a caused turnover and five draw controls. Sophomore attack Haley Wenzel (Coppell, Texas, Coppell) and sophomore defender Morgan Reidy (Pine City, N.Y., Elmira) each had a goal and an assist. Sophomore defender Isabella Cespedes (Merrick, N.Y., Sanford H. Calhoun) finished with a career-high seven ground balls and career-high seven caused turnovers. Freshman goalkeeper Falyn Snyder (Bel Air, Md., Bel Air) made nine saves. 

Amelia Booth fired in five goals for Alfred. She added four ground balls and had a pair of caused turnovers. Booth scored four of Alfred's seven fourth quarter goals. Morgan Wise finished with three goals, an assist, three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Alyssa Piechota had 15 saves and four ground balls. 

Freshman attack Morgan Clark (Bridgeville, Pa., South Fayette) and Rascona scored back-to-back goals in the first quarter to give Westminster a 2-1 lead. The goal was Clark's first. Rascona, with Westminster trailing 4-2 with just over nine minutes to go in the second quarter, scored a woman-up goal and scored again with just under eight minutes left to tie the game at 4-4. Wise netted her second goal of the half with under five minutes to go to give Alfred at 5-4 lead going into halftime.  

Rascona had a pair of third quarter goals to help the Titans carry a 7-5 lead into the fourth. Wenzel and Reidy opened the final quarter with back-to-back scores, stretching Westminster's lead to four, 9-5. Brazier and Booth traded goals midway through the quarter, with Brazier's score at the 8:19 mark extending Westminster's lead to 11-8. Alfred registered the final four goals of the game, with Kylee Bedette netting the game-winner with under three minutes left in regulation. 

Westminster will open the road portion of its schedule Saturday at La Roche University. The opening draw from the Baierl Athletic Complex is scheduled for 1 p.m.
