Titans rally in win over Gordon, secure Day 3 split

CLERMONT, Fla.--The Westminster College softball team split a pair of games Tuesday at THE Spring Games. The Titans suffered an 8-1 game one loss against Lebanon Valley College before rallying for a 2-1 game two victory over Gordon College.

Westminster, after Wednesday's off day, returns to action Thursday at the Legends Way Ballfields in Clermont against Emmanuel College (11:15 a.m.) and Defiance College (1:30 p.m.).

Game 1: Lebanon Valley 8, Westminster 1
Fifth-year first base Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, Pa., Laurel) staked the Titans to a 1-0 first inning lead. Her two-out triple scored freshman catcher Faith Jones (Volant, Pa., Wilmington), who led off with a walk. Lebanon Valley, a qualifier for last year's Division III Championship, responded with single runs in the bottom of the first and in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Leading 4-1 midway through the sixth, the Dutchmen tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 8-1.

Graduate student Madison Brown (Lisbon, Ohio, East Liverpool) fell to 0-2 in the circle this spring with the game one loss, allowing three runs (3 earned) on four hits in four innings. Junior Jenna Boneysteele (Carnegie, Pa., Chartiers Valley) allowed five runs (5 earned) on five hits with a walk in two innings of work. Brown and junior left fielder Danielle Teasdale (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) had two hits each. Junior Elliana Hsieh (York, Pa., Central York) entered to play third in the fifth inning and doubled in the sixth. Jones doubled in the seventh.

Erin Sinatra improved to 3-0 for Lebanon Valley in the complete game victory. She allowed one run (1 earned) on eight hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Julia Craig went 2-for-4.

Game 2: Westminster 2, Gordon 1
Scoreless after two innings, Gordon scratched out a single run in the third to snag the lead. Westminster opened the fourth inning with three-straight doubles from senior starter Elizabeth Malczak (Grove City, Pa., Grove City), Latess and Brown. Latess' double to right center scored Malczak and Brown's double down the left field line scored Latess.

Malczak improved to 2-1 with the win. She allowed one run (0 earned) on two hits with two strikeouts in four innings. Freshman Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) fired two innings of one-hit relief while freshman Riley Salazar (Elizabeth, Pa., Elizabeth Forward) retired three-straight batters in the seventh to register her first collegiate save. Freshman outfielder Leah Taliani (Arnold, Pa., Valley) drew a walk in the third and doubled to lead off the fifth in her first collegiate start.
