Titans take two

Latess becomes program's all-time home runs leader

CLERMONT, Fla.--The Westminster College softball team picked up a pair of wins Thursday at THE Spring Games, holding on for an 8-5 victory over Emmanuel College before cruising to a 8-2 win over Defiance College at the Legends Way Ballfields.

Highlighting Thursday's two wins was fifth-year Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, Pa., Laurel), who became the program's all-time leader in home runs (21) after her first inning, two-run shot against Emmanuel surpassed Jennifer Emery's 20 home runs (2007-10).

Westminster, now 4-4 this season, will close out its week-long run at THE Spring Games Friday in Leesburg at the Sleepy Hollow Complex. The Titans will take on Edgewood College at 12:30 p.m. before facing Suffolk University Boston at 2:45 p.m.

Game 1: Westminster 8, Emmanuel 5
Latess finished a single short of hitting for the cycle against Emmanuel, going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, a home run, four RBIs and a run scored. Freshman Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) had a pair of base hits while sophomore Lenina Ebert (Pittsburgh, Pa., Baldwin) delivered a two-run pinch hit single in fifth. Graduate student Madison Brown (Lisbon, Ohio, East Liverpool) won her first game this spring, allowing one run (0 earned) on two hits with four walks and eight strikeouts in four innings. Sophomore Emma Redlinger (Pittsburgh, Pa., Upper St. Clair) struck out a batter in the seventh to earn her first career save.

Amanda Penney and Olivia Conti had two hits apiece for Emmanuel. Starter Mackenzie Briggs allowed five runs (4 earned) on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 4.1 innings.

Leading 2-1 after four, Latess' two-run double and junior center fielder Sydney Lokay's (North Huntington, Pa., Norwin) RBI single bookended Westminster's six-run fifth inning. Five-straight singles with an out in the sixth plated four runs for the Saints.

Game 2: Westminster 8, Defiance 2
Westminster managed to turn four walks and an error into three first inning runs. Junior designated player Mia Meholick (Dubois, Pa., Dubois Central Catholic) and junior right fielder Sarah Eisenhuth (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) drew bases-loaded walks while Karpa had an RBI ground out. The Titans and Yellow Jackets traded second inning runs before Latess's RBI single in the fourth extended Westminster's lead to four, 5-1. With one out and two on in the bottom of the fourth, Defiance's Natalee Cooper lined into an inning-ending double play. Lokay's sacrifice fly in the fifth scored sophomore third base Elliana Hsieh (York, Pa., Central York), who singled earlier in the inning, to up the Titans' lead to 6-1. Lokay's two-out, run-scoring single in the sixth pushed the lead to 8-1.

Senior Elizabeth Malczak (Grove City, Pa., Grove City) improved to 3-1 in the circle this spring, allowing one run (1 earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts in six innings. Freshman Riley Salazar (Elizabeth, Pa., Elizabeth Forward) gave up one run (1 earned) on two hits and a walk in the seventh.

Westminster drew 10 walks in the nightcap, the most since taking 10 in an 8-0 (5 inn.) game one win over Pitt-Bradford last March. Latess went 2-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored. Lockay finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs while Hsieh went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

Brooke Silclox had two hits for Defiance. Cooper and Savanah Bergman both had doubles and RBIs while starter Savannah McCoy allowed five runs (2 earned) on two hits with eight walks and a strikeout in four innings.
