Titans lose on road

MARIETTA, Ohio--The Westminster College women's lacrosse team suffered a 17-9 loss to Marietta College Wednesday afternoon at Marietta Field. 

Marietta improved to 4-2 while Westminster fell to 1-3. Wednesday was the Pioneers' first home game this season. 

Sophomore midfielder Emma Brazier (Northport, N.Y., Northport) finished with five goals and added four draw controls and a ground ball. Senior midfielder Nina Rascona (Somerset, Pa., Somerset) finished one goal and two assists. She also had one caused turnover, five ground balls and four draw controls. Freshman attack Morgan Clark (Bridgeville, Pa., South Fayette) had a goal and a ground ball. Senior midfielder Samantha Reed (Zionsville, Pa., Emmaus) scored once and added one ground ball, one caused turnover and five draw controls. 

Freshmen goalkeepers Falyn Snyder (Bel Air, Md., Bel Air) and Amelia Mason (White Lake, Minn., Lakeland), along with junior Jade Hromanik (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shaler)shared net time Wednesday. Snyder started the game and gave up seven goals in 14 minutes. Hromanik played 26 minutes and allowed four goals while posting eight saves. Mason played the final 20 minutes, allowing six goals and stopping three shots.

Hope Adams paced Marietta with six goals and an assist. She added four ground balls, a caused turnover and a draw control. Renee Mulvaney finished with three goals, two assists and two ground balls. Marley Phillippe totaled four ground balls, three caused turnovers and a pair of draw controls. Alayna Francis had two assists, three ground balls, two caused turnovers and seven draw controls. Abby May made nine saves in the win. 

Brazier scored the final two goals of the first quarter to tie the game at 3-3. Westminster was outscored 4-1 in the second and went into halftime down 7-4. Brazier had the Titans' lost second quarter goal. Mulvaney scored all three of her goals in the third, with the Pioneers outscoring the Titans 6-2 in the quarter and taking a 13-6 lead into the fourth. Back-to-back goals by freshman attack Khloe Huba (Butler, Pa., Butler) and senior midfielder Samantha Reed (Zionsville, Pa., Emmaus) early in the fourth cut Marietta's lead to six, 14-8, with just over 11 minutes left. The Pioneers netted three of the game's final four goals to secure the non-league win. 

Marietta finished with a 32-27 advantage in shots and a 28-18 edge in shots on goal. Westminster was just 2-of-9 on free position shots Wednesday. 

Westminster hosts Davis & Elkins College Friday.The opening draw at the UPMC Sports Complex is scheduled for 5 p.m.
