Westminster women snag win against Franciscan

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball program secured a 47-42 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win over Franciscan University Wednesday evening at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium on the 38th annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD).

With the victory, Westminster improved to 12-10 overall and 10-8 in the PAC. Franciscan slipped to 4-18 overall and 2-15 in the conference. Wednesday was Westminster's eight-straight win over Franciscan in the all-time series. 

Graduate student Camden Hergenrother (Salem, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) led Westminster in the bounce back win with a season-high 19 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including a 3-of-6 effort from three-point field goal range. She also finished a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line. Hergenrother added four steals, three assists and a pair of rebounds. Fifth-year Natalie Murrio (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) added eight points, six rebounds and four assists. Senior Caitlyn Condoleon (Warren, Ohio, Warren JFK) finished with six points and four rebounds while junior Emily Hess (Edinboro, Pa., General McLane) chipped in with four points and eight boards. 

Ilena Gonzales finished with 15 points and six rebounds for Franciscan. Caroline Reedy added 14 points and six rebounds. Maria McCallen finished with eight points and 10 rebounds. 

The Titans led the Barons by six, 20-14, at the half. Murrio had six points, four rebounds and three assists for Westminster. Hergenrother added five points and had a pair of first half steals. McCallen, Gonzales and Doan had four points each for Franciscan. The Barons outrebounded the Titans 23-18 in the first half. 

Hergenrother's three-pointer with just over three minutes to go in the third extended the Titans' lead to 11, 36-25. Gonzales provided Franciscan with a third quarter lift, scoring nine points in the period and cutting the deficit to six, 36-30, with her made three-pointer with three seconds remaining in the period. 

Franciscan's 5-0 scoring surge to start the fourth quarter cut the Titans' lead to just one, 36-35. The Barons tied things up at 38 with just over three minutes to go in regulation. Hergenrother had seven points for the Titans in the final 2:40, knocking down four free throws in the final 26 seconds to earn the five-point win. 

Westminster shot a shot a season-low 26.7 percent (16-60) from the field on Wednesday and finished 10-of-12 (.833) from the free throw line. Franciscan shot 32.0 percent (16-60) from the floor and finished with a 43-37 rebounding advantage. 

Westminster is off Saturday and will return to action next Wednesday, Feb. 14 at Geneva College. Tipoff at Metheny Fieldhouse is scheduled for 6 p.m.
