Game Recap: Baseball |

Westminster falls twice at Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va.--The Westminster College baseball team opened its season Saturday with a pair of games at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium against regional powerhouse University of Mary Washington. The Eagles claimed a 9-3 game one victory before securing a 9-4 win in game two.

Mary Washington, a 2023 Division III Championship qualifier, improved to 6-0 this season. Westminster is now 0-2.

The Titans and Eagles will conclude their three-game weekend series with a single game Sunday at noon.

Game 1: Mary Washington 9, Westminster 3
After building a 3-0 lead after three innings, Mary Washington struck for six runs in the fifth. Trailing 9-0 after six, freshman designated hitter Quinn Marquis (Hinckley, Ohio, Highland) led off the seventh with a single. Junior pinch hitter David Kelly (Gibsonia, Pa., Eden Christian Academy) delivered a two-out single before advancing to second on a wild pitch and junior shortstop Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler) followed with a two-run double before scoring on freshman pinch hitter Kyle Hampson's (York, Pa., Dallastown) single.

Senior right-hander Kolton Banfi (Harrisville, Pa., Franklin) got the start in the lidlifter, allowing three runs (3 earned) on five hits and two walks in four innings.

Mary Washington pounded out 13 hits in the game one win while Westminster was limited to five. The sixth-inning singles by Marquis and Hampson were their first collegiate hits. Five Eagles players had two hits apiece. George Rizzo went 2-for-2 with a triple, two RBIs, a walk and a run scored. Justin Ritz fired five scoreless innings and struck out five to earn the win. Senior centerfielder Matthew Randza's (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) one-out single in the second was the lone hit allowed by Ritz.

Game 2: Mary Washington 9, Westminster 4
The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second before adding three more in the third. After being hit by a pitch leading off the sixth, senior third baseman Donald Shimko (Greensburg, Pa., Greater Latrobe) came around to score on back-to-back wild pitches. Mary Washington plated three runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to go up 9-1. Following ninth inning walks to Marquis and Randza, senior first baseman Jake Dockum (Fairport, N.Y., Allendale Columbia) drilled a three-run home run to close out the scoring. It was the second home run of his career.

Junior left-hander Jake Vitale (New Castle, Pa., Union) suffered the game two loss after he surrendered five runs (5 earned) on seven hits and two walks in three innings. Freshman right-hander Tyson Djakovich (Hermitage, Pa., Hickory) allowed three runs (3 earned) on two hits and a walk in 3.1 relief innings. Djakovich fanned the leadoff hitter in the fifth to record his first collegiate strikeout.

Mary Washington outhit Westminster 11-3 in game two. Tommy Martinez finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Gabe Delgado improved to 2-0 with the win in relief of starter Jackson Myers, who allowed one hit in three scoreless innings. Delgado allowed one run (1 earned) and struck out two in his three innings of work. In addition to Dockum's ninth-inning dinger, Marquis' first inning double and senior shortstop Logan Murgenovich's (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) single in the eighth were the only game two hits registered by the Titans.
