Unbeaten Mary Washington tops Westminster

Campbell leads offense with three hits, RBI

FREDERICKSBURG, Va.--The Westminster College baseball team suffered a 4-1 loss at the University of Mary Washington Sunday afternoon.

Mary Washington improved to 7-0 with Sunday's win. All seven of this season's victories have been at its home ballpark, V. Earl Dickinson Stadium. Westminster fell to 0-3.

The Eagles scratched out a run in the first on a two-out single by Ty Lowe, a three-time First Team All-Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) pick, and grabbed a 3-0 lead in the fourth on run-scoring doubles by Luke Guerzon and Ryan Schwarz. Junior shortstop Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler) got the Titans on the board in the fifth with a two-out RBI single before George Rizzo's two-out RBI double in the bottom of the frame upped the Eagles' lead to 4-1.

The Titans had a one-out, bases loaded opportunity snuffed out by back-to-back Connor Hassan strikeouts in the eighth.

Campbell went 3-for-5 for Westminster while senior second baseman Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) and senior rightfielder Carter Chinn (Grove City, Pa., Grove City) finished with two hits each. Chinn added a stolen base. Senior first baseman Jake Dockum (Fairport, N.Y., Allendale Columbia) had a two-out double in the fourth.

Westminster outhit Mary Washington 11-10. Four of the Eagles' hits went for extra bases.

Junior right-hander Ryan Gibbons (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) was the pitcher of record Sunday, allowing three runs (2 earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk in 3.2 innings. Sophomore right-hander Alexzander Fasulkey (Oakdale, Pa., Chartiers Valley) tossed two innings of scoreless relief. Freshman right-hander Jon Albers (Corry, Pa., Corry) walked one and struck out two in a scoreless eighth. Sunday was Fasulkey and Albers' collegiate debuts.

Mary Washington starter Gavin Riley improved to 2-0 with the win, allowing one run (1 earned) on seven hits with seven strikeouts in six innings. Hassan worked the final 1.2 innings and struck out four to earn the save. Lowe, Rizzo and Bobby Ayscue each had a pair of hits for the Eagles.

Westminster will open its home schedule Saturday against La Roche University. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
