Westminster opens season with victory

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.--Junior midfielder Gavin Jones (Henrico, Va., Douglas S. Freeman) finished with a career-high seven points to lead the Westminster College men's lacrosse team to a 10-9 season-opening victory over Penn College Wednesday afternoon at UPMC Field. 

Jones finished with five goals and two assists. It was the second five-goal game of his career (March 15 vs. Marietta). Jones has scored goals in six-straight games dating back to last season. Senior midfielder Jimmy Sentz (Catonsville, Md., Loyola Blakefield) had five points on two goals and three assists. Senior attack Payton Waight (Ithaca, N.Y., Ithaca) and sophomore attacks Kyler Nigliazzo (Montgomery, Texas, Magnolia West) and Brady Page (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) each finished with a goal and an assist. Nigliazzo's score was the first of his collegiate career. 

Senior faceoff Colin O'Malley (Pittsburgh, Pa., North Allegheny) went 15-of-23 at the dot and added seven ground balls. Junior midfielder Jonas Clark (Montgomery Village, Md., Watkins Mill) finished with two caused turnovers and six ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Bradley Green (Landisville, Pa., Hempfield) totaled 12 saves in the win. 

Devin Page led Penn with four goals. 

Westminster led 6-2 lead going into halftime. Jones and Setz scored man-up goals in the first half. Jones netted his third goal of the game off of an assist by Sentz with just under four minutes to go in the third quarter that pushed Westminster ahead 8-6. Jake Small and Harrison Schlachta opened the fourth with back-to-back goals, tying the game at 8 with just under 10 minutes to go in regulation. Jones scored twice in 44 seconds to put the Titans up two, 10-8, with 8:11 remaining. Page scored his fourth with under eight minutes left to close out the scoring. 

Westminster outshot Penn College 51-32, had a 28-21 advantage in shots on goal and a 39-32 edge in ground balls. Both teams had 11 caused turnovers. 

Westminster will be on the road Wednesday, Feb. 28 at The College of Wooster. The game is scheduled to start 6 p.m. at John P. Papp Stadium.
