Weir drops career-high 30 in win over Penn State DuBois

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Junior guard Drew Weir (Salem, Ohio, Salem) scored a career-high 30 points on 11-of-13 shooting in Westminster College's 94-83 victory over visiting Penn State DuBois at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium Wednesday night.

Westminster improved to 2-1 this season while Penn State DuBois fell to 2-2.

Weir shot 84.6 from the floor, went 3-of-3 from three-point range and knocked down 5-of-6 free throws. He added three steals, two assists and a pair of rebounds. Weir led four players in double figures. Junior guard Jaxon Hendershott (Salem, Ohio, West Branch) finished with 19 points, four rebounds and four steals. He was 8-of-11 from the field and made three of his four attempted three-point field goals. Freshman forward Michael Burbach (West Farmington, Ohio, Bristol) totaled 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting and added three rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals while sophomore guard Skevos Kouros (Youngstown, Ohio, Campbell) had 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting to go along with six steals, four assists and two rebounds. All 10 of Kouros' points came in the first 20 minutes.

Beau Verdill led Penn State DuBois with 21 points, eight rebounds and eight steals. Kyron Harbin finished with 20 points and eight rebounds.

The Titans took control of the first thanks to an 11-2 scoring run midway through half. Weir had nine of Westminster's 11 during the stretch. Freshman guard Christian Ito's (Pittsburgh, Pa., Upper St. Clair) layup with under three minutes left in the half pushed the lead to a dozen, 45-33, before three-pointers by Verdill and Harbon trimmed the deficit to six, 47-41, going into the break. Weir scored 19 first half points.

Penn State DuBois came out strong in the second, and Verdill's bucket with under 17 minutes to go gave the Lions a 53-49 edge. Westminster responded with an 8-0 run to go up eight, 61-53, with 14:39 remaining. Weir and Hendersott combined for all eight points. After Penn State DuBois evened the game at 76-76 with just under five-and-a-half to go, Westminster, fueled by a 12-1 run, upped its lead to eight, 87-79, with just over two minutes left in regulation. Weir had seven and Hendershott had five during the stretch. The teams traded buckets down the stretch before junior guard Mick Hergenrother (Canfield, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) closed out the scoring with a pair of made free throws with less than 30 seconds to go. Hendershott scored 17 of his 19 in the second half on 7-of-8 shooting.
