Gratchic nets game-winner, leads Westminster past Franciscan

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Sophomore midfielder Jocelyn Gratchic (Connellsville, Pa., Connellsville) scored the game-winning goal off an assist from senior forward Brooke Horvath (Murrysville, Pa., Franklin Regional) in the 20th minute of the Westminster College women's soccer program's 1-0 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Franciscan University Friday night at the UPMC Sports Complex. 

The men's and women's soccer teams hosted an Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Awareness Day during Friday's doubleheader, honoring the life of Michelle Vilchek, mother of Westminster senior midfielder Natalie Vilchek (West Newton, Pa., Yough), who lost her four-year battle with ALS in August 2023.

Westminster, now winners of three straight, improved to 4-5 overall and 3-0 in league play. Friday's win avenged a 2-1 loss to Franciscan in the semifinal round of last year's PAC Championship Tournament. Westminster has won four of the last six against Franciscan, which fell to 3-8 overall and 2-2 in the conference. 

Friday's goal was the third of the year for Gratchic. It was her first career game-winning score. 

Junior Morgan Murphy (Yardley, Pa., Villa Joseph Marie) made three saves, earning her second shutout this season. Friday was Murphy's 11th career shutout. 

Westminster outshot Franciscan 15-10 and had a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Franciscan finished with five corner kicks to Westminster's three. The Barons controlled possession 53 percent of the time.

Tuesday, Westminster hosts Chatham University. The league match is scheduled to get underway at 7:30 p.m.
